|

Hi all,
Just wondering if the following salary and benefits are good for teaching at a prestigous private university college in Malaysia? I've been teaching in Hong Kong and will take on a 2 year contract with the hope of saving money as I have no idea of the cost of living but do not spend a lot of money on entertainment.
Monthly salary: 8,000-8,800 ringit
income tax: 13%
gratuity at the end of 2 years: 23%
flight to Malaysia included
insurance included
annual trip to home country included.
I will be teaching 3/6 periods a day.
Please let me know if this is comparable to other rates expats would be receiving as I really want to save some money to take back to Canada!
Thanks. |

How about your accomodation? Do you have to pay for that out of your salary? That would be a big consideration....

Actually, tax is 28% for your first six months--that's what they take out of my salary, anyway. The rest of your deal looks pretty good--better than mine in some ways.
However, having been here over 3 months, I would caution you about heat and humidity, rats and lizards and insects, the crime rate, traffic and pollution and the meat in supermarkets.
Often do I wish I had gone back to Korea, or even China, instead of coming here .... |

Yes, I would have to pay for accomodation, though the school will give me accomodation free of charge for the first month. |

Hi
The above poster is in the minority - most have only good things to say about Malaysia. Mind you, the amount you will be able to save will depend how much you are paying for accomodation. Is the school in KL? |

Thank you for your postings! The school is in Bandar Sunway. If I haven't mentioned this before, I was quoted accomodation as between 800-1600 per month.
Still wondering if this is a good salary as my salary in HK is much higher but rent is also very expensive!
Thanks! |

There are many postings on this on the TES overseas forum. Just go to
www.tes.co.uk
and put in a search for Malaysia on the overseas forum.

The salary is in the range that a new PhD would receive at a public university, so yes it is a good level.
Accommodation in the Sunway area of Subang Jaya will run RM1500 - 3000 per month depending upon the area and type of housing. If you want to be close to those who have expat packages, expect to pay the same top price that their companies pay for them. Otherwise, you can rent a interior-link house or apartment for a price in the lower end of that range.
Subang Jaya is hell, in my opinion. I worked there for four years and it is probably more like living in Hong Kong than in the bulk of Malaysia. Expect traffic jams most of the day (yes), and double- and triple-parked cars along major roads and frontage roads. Garbage everywhere. Hahahaha, doesn't sound so nice eh?
I highly recommend using a motorcycle, it would make commuting a lot less stressful. Otherwise, if you can find living accommodations close (walking distance) from your work then you can also live a lower-stress lifestyle. Bandar Sunway is famous for its Sunway Pyramid shopping centre (with ice skating rink!) and its Water Park (with surf pool). Much too Chinese for my taste, but someone else might like it.
Yes! Malaysia is a great place, but I would have to say that Sunway is the worst suburb for living and working.

You can't compare HK costs and salaries with those in Malaysia. If you're in HK now, you must surely realise it is bloody expensive. The equivalent of RM9000 would be crap money in HK. Come on, the cheapest bowl of noodles in HK is $35. That's RM16, which would get you three bowls of noodles in Malaysia. Yes, RM9K is good. |

Thats a really huge salary in Malaysia. You'll be able to save more than half of that and still live really well. |

I agree with you stanny. Most private colleges do not pay that kind of salary because they can get away with hiring fresh graduates and paying them in the RM2,000 to 3,000 range. I suspect that his offer is from Monash U, which is in Bandar Sunway. Monash is an Australian university with a branch campus in Malaysia, and they would be most likely to pay a higher salary. I can't see Sunway University College paying that unless he holds a PhD. |

What about a similar salary (about 8-8.5k before tax and accomm is not provided) in KL? Is that still considered very good or just adequate? |

When you say "KL", do you really mean the city portion, or another suburb of the KL-Klang basin? Downtown KL is more expensive than the out-lying suburbs for rentals unless you locate in one of the poorer zones of KL, such as Kampung Baru or Kampung Keramat.
A condo in downtown KL will probably run 3-5k per month. I haven't checked in a while so I am not 100% sure. Inflation last year was running around 8-9% although the government was reporting lower figures. It figures!
Tax shouldn't be too much. You can cut down on transport costs by either using mass transit (KTM commuter train, LRT, Monorail), using a motorcycle or motor scooter, or living within walking distance. Using a personal car is quite expensive, time-wise and ringgit-wise. Parking downtown is very hard to secure; people pay RM150-400 per month just on parking permits.
If you give us the general location of the school, we can probably give better advice. |

I live just off Bukit Bintang, which is central KL, and I pay RM1,600 for my place. It's a one bedroom apartment, new and with all the normal amenities.
As for the 8-8.5k salary, that's definitely considered good for teaching in Malaysia. I believe that most teachers would be lucky to get 4k per month. |
