Just came across this job advertisement where they advertise to teach in Qingdao.

"we need 3 native english teachers urgently in a training school in a beautiful coastal city, qingdao, shandong province."

then later on in the advertisement they say

"Where you will stay: Jiaonan(where is near to Huangdao and it takes you about 1h20mins to City center of Qingdao.), which is one of the oldest town of China and if you do like tradictional Chinese culter and it is your first choice. Any difference from other cities, you can experience by yourself."

I bet you that 1 hour 20 minutes is more like 2 - 3 hours. How deceitful to advertised for a particular location, but in reality the school being in a totally different location.

Ah, the lies, lies, lies! Rolling Eyes

So what is the biggest load of BS you have heard in China?

Pointless piece of BS anyway... They should just say Jiaonan, which is in Shandong and has a nice beach (which it does).

Would attract plenty of people.

it seems there is a country called china.
that country has a province called shandong.
that province has a county called qingdao.
that county has a city called jiaonan.

according to google maps,
qingdao to jiaonan is 108km, mostly freeway. (1hr38)
or you can cut that to 47km by taking the ferry. (1hr43)

unclear, but not necessarily deceitful. would you feel the
same way if the ad read "a training school in beautiful coastal
qingdao county,shandong province?"

or you can take the bridge which would reduce the travel times to roughly what I said. Your point remains the same however.

EDIT:
Seems my previous post in this thread magically disappeared....
Jiaonan *is* in Qingdao. There is no other way to look at it. Yes it is a fair bit out of the city center but it is Qingdao. About an hour by car from taidong if you use the bridge and the bus would likely be 2 hours though I have never taken the bus there.

Picking on this advert and calling it bull seems to be quite a stretch.

This goes to a point I have found in trying to wade through offers, the Chinese will not be truthful even when it doesn't matter. When you call them on it they either come back that you are the one at fault or will continue to lie.

When I was in the military, South Koreans were basically the same.

Almost every advertisement for every school I've considered and taught for has stated that the city is located either on the banks of the Yangtze River or the Yellow River. I've never seen either.

Except, the leading line says "Qingdao" "City", not county. So it is misleading.

Except, the chinese would be 青岛市, and you would be working within
qingdao city (county in ingrish) administrative district. the text clearly
states jiaonan. actually not a bad job posting, considering nobody outside
of china has ever heard of jiaonan.

seems pretty honest actually, seeing as they included "Where you
will stay: Jiaonan(where is near to Huangdao and it takes you about
1h20mins to City center of Qingdao.)"

if they had said "short bus ride to city center," then you'd have an
argument. they even included the actual time required to get to
the downtown qingdao. as it stands, no lies in this ad.

just bored folks looking for something to complain about.

The border of a major city extends to about half way to the next major city.
For example I taught a summer in a town (Gai Zhou) almost exactly half way between Dalian and Shenyang.
The train (not express) trip took 2 hrs 55 mins whereas to Shenyang it was 6 hrs.
The Gai Zhou people considered they 'belonged to Dalian'.
So it isn't necessarily BS and if for the OP the employer considered that QD has more recognition value (which it does) then you can see the connection.
As with everything in China you have to dig a bit to get bedrock.
Accom - is that room or apartment? Share or single?
Payday on 20th - is that 20th of the month worked or 20th of month following.
The list is endless.

I have not commuted 3 hours to work in my life. That's a 6 hour day added to your schedule in return for a meagre salary (at best).
Blimey, the things that some people will do here in China for a 'teaching' job never fails to astound or amaze.

I technically live in Shanghai, but it takes over an hour to get to the Bund. I think that given the cost of rent in major cities, the chance that one would get to live and work downtown may not be so great. Many schools are located on the fringes. I think that including the district in the ad made it pretty honest. It's up to the applicant to ask the questions.

You obviously can't handle living or working in China if you cannot accept (1) that Jiaonan and Huangdao ARE part of China and (2) that the simple concept of advertising Qingdao is a normal business practice, even in the U.S. or other countries.

I would suggest you find another country that caters to your every demand.

That being said, why can't you get a nice, adequately advertised, high paying job in your own country?

Yeah, that is acceptable mate.
However, 3 hours to work and 3 hours back home is just ludicrous.

Based on what was quoted in the ad, it doesn't seem dishonest to me. In fact, it warns the prospective employee that it is not, in fact, located in downtown Qingdao. I don't think "probably lying" is the same as lying.
