How dangerous is Japan? |
It's safe, so long as you monitor your geiger counter at all times. |

It's okay so long as you don't plan on having any kids. |

UPDATE It seems that a few people were missing the irony, so I added '(JOKE!!!)' to the title. Please read the blogpost I link to, and all will be clear.
I got sick of seeing questions like this one:
(Sorry to pick on you, eck, but yours was the nearest to hand.)
So I decided to write an all-out, no-holds-barred expose on how we cope with the everyday reality of all-pervasive nuclear contamination. Something to answer all the "is Japan safe?" questions once and for all (and scare away anyone who might be after our jobs).
Here it is: Living with Radiation or How to survive in the land of the rising Sieverts.
I spent a lot of time on this, so any feedback would be much appreciated.
Peter

Poor question. The disaster is regional. |

Very poor poll, IMO. The last 2 answers are essentially identical scares. |

Guys, if you take the time to read the blog post, I think you'll come to the conclusion that it's a joke. |

Oh! I was puzzled by the responses I was getting, until you pointed out that they weren't getting it.
I guess it's true what they say about British humour (spelt with a 'u'). |

It's a joke in poor taste considering since it is directed at anyone living in Japan. |

I'm astonished that you've taken it that way. But, then again, I was surprised so many people didn't recognise it as a joke in the first place.
The point of the joke is to hold up a mirror to exaggerated radiation fears of some visitors to Japan. I also hoped to entertain those who live in Japan by re-imagining some features of Japanese culture -- things like the appalling pet-shops, or the water heaters -- as if they were responses to a toxic environment.
There: now I've spoiled the joke by explaining it.
I have a question for you. My intention was not to confuse or offend, but to entertain. What should I have done to make it clearer? Would it have made more sense to you if, say, I'd added some specific quotes from people asking alarmist questions about radiation in Japan? |

Taste is relative.
Explaining it would kill it. such is the nature of pragmatic failure; particularly when humour is involved. |

Not funny. Some of us have been exposed to more rads than others. Dealing with rads by scraping school grounds and parks and hosting refugees from the no-go zone have severely dented the budget of my city, which afffects our pay cheques. :-/ |
