I've been in Vietnam about a year and I can only kick myself for not coming here sooner. South Vietnam is a great place to work; it's a great place to be. it's a shame I tried to hack out a living in China and balance an intellectual interest for the place with my working life. The Chinese language and culture interested me, as did the opportunity to travel its vast land and visit the historical sites. And 10 years ago, my working experience in China was positive. Things changed as China developed.
Vietnam, at least down South, all is well. No, I don't recruit for Vietnam (sorry) but I just want to say my professional and personal life are great here. I enjoy my life more than I ever enjoyed life in China.

All is well in the north also. Distinct seasons, lovely lakes and colonial architecture, wonderful people in Hanoi. |

The great American Trowzer snake is an invasive species that is becoming increasingly more common in urban areas in Vietnam.
When provoked, it can grow up to twice it's normal length and spit a caustic white venom up to a meter.
Unlike most snakes, this species normally dwells in expat areas and has been known to attack foreign women as well as the locals, so take extra precautions and remain vigilant when visiting Vietnam! |

I believe that species of snake is endemic to all western and eastern countries... not just the USA! I believe the snake roams cities wherever men in pants (or trousers) exist.
As for REAL snakes in Vietnam, you're about as likely to have a car fall on you from the clear blue sky as you are to be bitten by a snake of any kind while in Vietnam for one to 100 years, however long you ended up staying.
Sure, there are some snakes in off-the-beaten path jungle areas, even cobras, but no school would require you to teach in the bush-- I promise you that.
Now should you plan to hike in remote jungle areas, good for you! Get a good pair of hiking boots, a guide, and be sensible. Bear attacks are more common than snake attacks but nobody seems to worry about visiting Canada or upper-midwestern America despite the fact that ferocious bears are common in Wisconsin, Upper Michigan and most of Canada.

Might as well chime in that all is well in the Central Region as well (Danang, Hue, Hoi An). I honestly prefer it much more than Hanoi, but the slower, beach town atmosphere may be more suitable to my personality. |
