I'm about to leave Japan after being here for 6 years. I'm going home to do a CELTA then my plan is to go to Spain. I have, however, been considering alternatives to Spain if things don't work out there.
What I'd really like to know, and to some this is going to be an annoyingly general question, is what are the easiest countries to find work in? (outside of East and South East Asia). I have a preference for Europe (I'm an EU citizen) and am quite interested in UAE and Saudi Arabia. My main concerns are distance from the UK and availability of work.
Recap on background: 6 years experience in Asia, will hopefully have a CELTA, UK national.
Hope someone can give me some advice. |

You didn't state your specific qualifications, but to teach at an international or public school in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, you'll need at least a BA, a current teaching license from your home country, and a couple of years of experience. Teachaway.com is the main source for these positions in the Gulf.
To teach at the tertiary level in the UAE & Saudi Arabia, you'll need a related MA, CELTA/equivalent TEFL cert, and a few years of relevant, post-MA teaching experience (i.e., experience that included any of the following: academic writing, language testing, curriculum design, TOEFL prep, ESP, etc.). There are some positions in the Kingdom of S.A. for those with a BA as well as the other quals mentioned; however, those gigs are generally with sketchy contractors and are not direct-hire opportunities. |

After your CELTA there's tons of work here in the Glorious Motherland. |

Spain ? Where 30% plus of people under 25 are unemployed ? Not smart.
Bite the bullet and head for the Gulf. |

Spain is in the middle of a serious economic crisis, and TEFL jobs have never been very well-paid there anyway. You won't be saving anything, to speak of, in Spain, and the jobs are all mostly dead-end, poorly-paid,
language school jobs.
By the way, you can get a Saudi college job with a BA, CELTA and some experience. I have a master's, but most of my co-workers at my college in Saudi were only BA + CELTA. In Saudi, if you're lucky enough to find a decent uni/college employer, you'll save a considerable chunk of money each month, and then spend it all during your holidays, trying to blank out the mind-numbing bleakness of life in the "Kingdom of Humanity".
Go for the UAE, or if money's not such a concern, try Turkey. |

Just curious. Where have you been teaching in Japan and how easy was it to get your first job without a CELTA and 'non-teaching BA'?
As for Spain. Only go there if you value a relaxing time over actually having any money. A lot of my former students have actually left to find work in other Countries and said they won't return 'for at least 5 years' due to the crisis. And with a new-ish right-wing government in charge there it's unlikely to get better any time soon for the 'non-rich'. |

I've got several friends having a great time working in Spain right now. They found jobs easily, and are living well. I doubt the money matches what you were earning in Japan, but it doesnt sound like thats so important to you.
Italy too, has lots of jobs available. Most unadvertised on the internet, however, you would need to be there to find them. |
