Hello, Im leaving Japan next month, after having taught here for almost a year. My employee takes tax out of my salary every month, but im wondering if I have to pay any extra (municipal?) tax upon leaving?
I heard that I dont have to pay this if ive been resident in japan for less than a year, is this correct? Thanks |

It might depend on your nationality. Just contact the ward office and ask. |

Strictly speaking, you are liable, but the way it works in practice is that your liability is based on your previous year earnings. If you stay only one year then you never incur any liability because you don't reach the second year point where the numbers get calculated.
If you feel a burning desire to pay you can visit the local ward/city tax office with your final pay EOY tax form and have them calculate your bill. |

Previously a lot of people didn't pay and money wasn't withheld from paychecks.
However (for future reference), the government is getting stricter and starting to force employers to withhold this tax. |
