I'm thinking of moving to Shanghai soon and I have an interview set up with Web International. They seem to offer somewhat decent benefits.

Anyone working there currently? What is it like? I taught in Guangzhou before and i've been to Shanghai before so I know I like the city. Just want more info about the company.

Aside from the normal Asian work politics is there anything I should know before going?

dfusa, if you don't mind me asking, how was the interview? Did you end up getting the job and if so how is it? Because I also have an interview arranged with Web International in Shanghai and was curious about your experience with them.

thanks

I work at Web now. It's okay, but I can't compare it with other schools in Shanghai. The students are great, most of the Chinese tutors are good, some of the other staff and management, not so good, but that's just at my school. From my understanding, a lot of the managers have no experience. They were just really good at sales, so they got promoted to management.

But again, I really like the students and the material's good enough, too. I'd try to find out this: which center you'll be working at and how many social clubs you'll be preparing each week. There are a few centers that are in the middle of nowhere.

We're getting a new teacher, and I'll be bumped down to three social clubs a week. Woo-hoo!

Typical language mill that just has a lot of franchises.
Enjoy your goldfish bowl, long hours and ECA's.
Best avoided like the plague unless it is your first gig in China.

Wow, do you mean you have to prepare 3 different social clubs a week? Does that take up all your outside time?

I used to spend an inordinate amount of time preparing them, but some teachers grab stuff from books or web sites to use. Others virtually wing it, though I wouldn't recommend that. Some social clubs I invested much time in bombed and others that I threw together were wildly successful. It is really not so bad. You learn what works for you and get into a comfortable preparation groove.

I don't particularly care how many franchises a school has. My primary concerns are how I'm treated, how much I'm paid, and how professionally the school/business is run. Goldfish bowl? It comes with the territory of being a foreign teacher. Long hours? At Web you're teaching five "prefab" classes a day with minimal preparation required. Not exactly sweatshop labor.

It would be easy enough to land a uni job, but the extra time off isn't worth settling for pay in the range of 5000 RMB per month. For those wishing to teach adults in China, "mills" are not nearly as bad as the plague.
