I have a contract startiing September 1st. Now I am looking to book a ticket. My school sad they will mail me the visa papers at the end of the week. Then it will take 2 weeks for me to get it and then off to the embassy in NY. Looks like I can book a ticket for August 25th or so. I will not book a ticket till after I get the visa.
Anyway, a one way ticket is 1,000 dollars, and around 37+ hours. That is with 2 stops. A shorter flight can cost up to 4,000 dollars.
Does anyone know where to go for a ticket? Thanks.

What are you doing flying over the south pole in a helecopter? You can go just about anywhere today in around twenty hours.
It is much cheaper flying in China or it used to be. Fly to Beijing or Shanghai. Coming from America I recommend Beijing or from Souther Asia Guanahou or Shanghai.

I think airfares are quite reasonable, considering the distance covered.

OP - Go direct to the airlines themselves, they all have websites. The prices you quote look nuts to me. You can fly NYC - London for 5000 RMB return, and London - Hong Kong for around the same! Approx �1000 or 10,000 RMB...not quite sure what that works out as dollars, but less than your $4000 I think!

aircanada is not bad these days i just looked at a flight (I guestamated your dates) from NYC to Vancouver to Shanghai it was about 1500 (round trip)

I'm sure if you shop your dates a little you can shave 10-15 percent maybe...

If you want to go cheap in this day and age, you'll need to take a sleeping bag and a pillow. There are great deals out there you can get, but most involve long layovers and multiple stops. If I were going to China from the USA, I'd take a bus or get a ride share to California, Oregon, or Washington and fly out from one of the airports in those states. I'd not fly across the USA. That can add up to 75% to the cost of a long-haul flight to Japan, Korea, or seaboard China.

total of 1200NZD. or around 5700RMB back then at the exhange rates of the time. Now I can get CQ to Shenzhen 700RMB return then HK to Auckland 6000 return so return flights are not MUCH more than one way was back then.

Use comparison websites and shop around...

I normally fly from London>Hong Kong. Rather bizarrely one-way flights with the carriers I use are often a similar price to returns. This only tend to apply on flights from London....those are the examples when the one-way is as much as the return. Flights from Hong Kong>London are much more reasonable.
