So after a week of clearing out my inbox of job offers, I've narrowed it down to two definite possibilities and there are a few maybes floating around. For now, I'll focus on the two. I'd appreciate any advice!
Harbin Deqiang School in Harbin, Heilongjiang
This is a private school, elementary through senior. The contract seems pretty detailed. They offer 5000 RMB per month and free accomadation, including a computer with Internet access. Though, from what I gather, Harbin is *COLD*. And what's the expat community like in Harbin?
Donghua University, Shanghai
I haven't heard too much about it, but the draw is Shanghai. They offer 3600 RMB per month and free housing or an allowance. Significant paycut, but... Shanghai. Great nightlife in Shanghai.
Any suggestions? Comments? Anything would be appreciated. |

| Harbin is more than cold its blood freezing!! But it would be very interesting to live there I imagine, Shaghai's nightlife might be out of reach for 3600RMB anyway i'll leave it up to the experts to help you. |

The new teacher here has come from Harbin - forget it - it is MINUS 20 or more in the winter and bloody cold the rest of the time I would think.
Shanghai is more the go for decent weather. Shanghai is also starting to grow on me, although I prefer to live in a smaller City. If I was younger however, I know I would love Shanghai as the night life is quite good. |

You get LOTS OF RUSSIANS! I love Harbin, actually, despite the cold. There are quite a number of foreign students there (especially at HIT) and if you hit the Russian clubs and bars, you'll definitely find some. I find the people to be a lot nicer than in Shanghai (although the weather and food both remind me of my native New Orleans, I can't take the size) and that life in general is a lot easier there. Plus you can easily take trips to the lovely Fuladiwosituoke (Vladivostoke? in Russia) with the middle class Chinese! What fun! |

| Kids in Harbin or 3600 in Shanghai. Neither sounds too good but I guess Harbin. |

| Harbin. 3000something in Shanghai won't go far and as for the language. Up here in the Northeast, it's pure Mandarin. |

I've lived in the chlorine gas explosion capital of China, Chongqing, for nearly two years now. It's polluted, noisy, and a geographic oddity...5 hours from anywhere. Sometimes you fall in love with a place even though logic tells you otherwise.
My suggestion is Harbin. I don't think one factor, like cold weather, should stop you from experiencing such a unique place. But if being comfortable is what you want, I suggest Shanghai.
In making your decision, go for what is interesting/ exciting as opposed to the lesser of two evils approach.

Harbin cold? True - but only in WINTER. They also have a mild or even warm summer.
In Siberia, it can get pretty hot in Juyly, so why not in Harbin? |

| I too vote Harbin. I've never been, but I'm looking to catch the Ice Lantern Festival next year, hopefully. Your 3600 isn't enough to live comfortably in Shanghai. Plus, -20 in the winter isn't cold, just normal... or am I the only Northern boy posting here? |

Indeed it is. I'd suggest this option, but for the lifestyle you're looking for, there's a snag:

| They offer 3600 RMB per month |
For this city and what you're looking for, such pay is peanuts. Even if they provide free housing (which, I admit, is a nice bonus here), you'll see that extra money disappear in a weekend or two.
If you're frugal and know how to save money, this salary will go a long way, even in one of the most expensive cities in China. When I really had to scrape by last year after all my money was stolen, I could get away with spending 2000 a month.
I'll be honest - if you mix the allure and expectations of Shanghai with a low salary, it can be quite painful.
So for what you're looking for, I'd suggest a higher salary, either by moonlighting extra hours or accepting a job that pays more. If you made that salary in another city or province, you'd have little problems.
The difference between Shanghai and other places of China is really substantial, in other words.

Do tell? Is that like saying New York is not representative of the rest of the US? I live right outside New York, went there twice weekly for my internship, go in frequently enough for the fun of it, but no, where I live is nothing like the city and foreign students who have come to my school have frequently expressed their disappointment that, despite being 30 minutes from the city, is not very city-like at all.
I appreciate everyone's commentary so far. I've been talking to the FAO at Harbin Deqiang (well, frequent emails anyway) and right now, it seems like a pretty good choice. But I still want to hear everyone's opinions. They're interesting to read.

Have you done this? If so, did you manage it without a trip to Beijing for a visa? |
Sadly, no. :/ Those I know who did go (when I was a student in Beijing) were already in Beijing, save one still in Harbin who came down to Beijing for his visa (so, yes, you do have to do the visa run from what I understand). One of our professors while we were in Harbin had constantly badgered us to go, bringing pictures, information, etc., so they all went (and got really drunk)! I admit that saying "easily" was a bit facetious.
Did anybody mention the Snow and Ice Festival of Harbin? It's really something to behold....
Also Harbiners will definitely help you prepare for the cold. I recall winter clothing being in the stores as early as August. You'd just have to layer, layer, layer like everyone else. |

That analogy sounds very apt. It describes my situation to a tee where I'm an hour outside Shanghai in some god-awful suburban joint. It's literally like going to another world when I make the commute.
