The following is from a colleague who doesn't have an ID on the international forums. (i.e. Post replies here, not in a PM.)

-----------

I applied and just did an interview.

Anyone heard of this place? Any feedback would be appreciated...

Any feedback about TESOL in Oman compared to other ME nations too...

I know only about the job posting. The only thing I noticed there is housing is not free -- the allowance is built into the pay (they said around $3,000 US per month) - and they will help you find a place once you arrive...

Never having taught in the region, I would feel much more comfortable with housing already lined up...

(I have taught in Korea for about 8 years and in the US.)

I am not familiar with this employer, but it looks standard for the lower tier small private colleges/institutes. They should also be covering the cost of tickets, some sort of medical plan, and a gratuity on base pay is also required by law. Also, they should house you for at least a week or two while you search for a flat.

Finding housing is not terribly difficult in Oman and as long as they actually give you assistance shouldn't be too difficult. One thing he should ask about is furnishing. Many flats come with NOTHING... not even ACs in the holes in the walls. So, a furniture allowance should be standard, but usually isn't for these small places. If they don't provide some sort of loan/advance, he will need to bring funds for the basics.

Living in Oman is like being in the suburbs of the US, you really need a car. So, he should have a current driving license from his home country. Many teachers lease a car, but those who plan to stay for more than a couple years should probably buy.

Personally I find it the most interesting and pleasant of the Gulf countries. If he enjoys the outdoors, it is definitely the best place.

As to EFL teaching, he will find it very different from teaching in Asia. These students will talk up a storm... but be unable to write a simple grammatical sentence... and have a very limited vocabulary. Levels are very low... average mostly intermediate at best.

My sources in Oman inform me that CBFS is a a well established institution with a long history noted for relatively well-behaved, often charming students of limited ability who sooner or later are expected to take IELTS, and that one's success there might well be dependent on how well one manages to teach students with limited linguistic resources how to successfully leap this hurdle .

As regards a comparison with Korea, as VS has said be prepared for a steep learning curve on your part!
