Hi, My husband and I came to Taiwan in January 2004. he has an ARC, but the Government wanted proof of our marriage before I could get an ARC. We had our ORIGINAL couriered over to Taiwan, now we have been told that we must take it back to South Africa and have the Taiwan Embassy verify that it is ACTUALLY an original. Can anyone please offer any suggestions of an easier way around this? We cannot afford to return to South Africa just to sort this matter out.
Any help would be appreciated.

My wife and I got married here in Taiwan and back in the US. We never have had a problem having our marriage recognised in either place.
Dig out your tux and dress and get hitched again. There is a small fee and the local court house in Tien Mu does a really nice job of it.
Don't forget to send me an invitation.

Can't you send the certificate to South Africa and let your family take it to the Taiwan consulate (or whatever they are called)?
Or get married here as well.

Unfortunately you will find it very difficult to get an ARC as a dependent if your spouse is not Chinese.
The openly and blatantly racist government of the Republic of China makes it a practice to refuse non Chinese the right to bring their families to Taiwan as dependents. The only immigration allowed under the R.O.C. is by Chinese.
Almost everyone I have talked to about this has had to have their spouses and children live here on tourist visa's for the duration of their stay. Including those with Permanent Alien Residency.
Good luck,
A.

Perhaps such pessimism is unwarranted. I have a friend* who is taking Chinese classes at Taipei Language Institute, not a bona fide university. He got a visa for studying there, and his SEA wife got a visa the same day through his visa. It was no problem.

*A real, genuine friend--not an urban legend starting with "I have a friend..." to refer to someone I heard of through the grapevine
