Anyone familiar with this company? Will be interviewing for a position in Guangzhou. Haven't seen the offer yet just wondered if they have a reputation good, bad or indifferent?
Thank You |

Standard training center, long office hours, working on weekends, English corners etc. Better materials than Web, and I know that the three Metens in Suzhou always pay on time and what-not, no idea about Guangzhou though. |

I know Meten in Shenzhen.
They are alright. When I was with them they were going thru a bunch of turnover as they were learning the Shenzhen market and had over hired and overloaded themselves.
They have since reduced a bunch of their overhead, dumped some people and seem to have stabilized. I never heard any super horrible horror stories, just the usual, late visa, no help, messy schedules, odd and incomprehensible lessons, and absurd expectations from oversold students.
Basically, normal. |

My interview with Meten was extremely unprofessional. After a 10 minute interview, they told me to spend 40 minutes preparing a demo lesson. I would then have to teach paying students for 55 minutes.
1. What kind of job interview lasts for 2 hours?
2. Why were they going to make money off my teaching before they even hired me?
It doesn't bode well for teachers if they start cheating you before you even get hired. |

The demo lesson is not uncommon at all. I would not put anything in writing though, no need to provide a school with a free lesson plan. Just do your thing and make the kids laugh and smile. It is a popularity contest. Sprinkle in just enough content to say you taught something...toss them 3 to 5 new words. Done.
If you feel a demo lesson is cheating...then do not do it. Just letting you know it is far from unheard of. |

Taught part-time for them in Xiamen, in the Web and Wall Street mold, fair to good full-time gig depending on the center and management, afternoons and evenings will be sacrificed five days a week to the daily grind, but last class ends at 9 PM so you'll have plenty of time to catch up with your mates for a pint, mornings to sleep in and hopefully 2 days off in a row to enjoy your life in one of the best big cities in China. |
