Hello!
I am looking into doing a MASTERS in TESOL through distance ed/online. I have seen that there are a FEW universities in Australia that offer Masters programs through distance ed. Do any of you have any recommendations for good schools/good programs?! BEing a Canadian, I don't know anything about Australian universities...
THANKS!

I am also Canadian. I am starting a Masters in applied linguistics in a couple of months with the University of Southern Queensland. The cost is good too, about $9200 Cdn. Another good school is UNE. I would have liked to have done with a Cdn university, but there are no unis that have a masters degree in TESL by distance.

hi gordon

Yes I've heard the Uni of Southern Queensland is very good.
But so too is UNE. I did my first degree at UNE and my son is currently studying externally. They have a VERY organized distance education department and I could not fault them.
I did my Masters in Applied Linguistics (you can also do it in TESOL) at University of Technology, Sydney. Again, this is very good - they have a good reputation for TESOL. Also they are very organized by distance. I started the Masters part time and then reverted to distance. So any of these three would be ok. I must say that this was an AWFUL lot of work, so be prepared.
These three universities are all recognised overseas.
I don't know however how much these courses would cost you if you are not an Australian. I believe the fees are quite different. Good luck.

Combchick,
I've looked at all 3 universities you've mentioned (UNE, UTS, and USQ) and have all of their catalogues. The tuition ranges from $9200-$12,000 Australian or Cdn (xchange rates are the same). Yes, they all look good.

I've heard good things about the program at Charles Sturt University (CSU) too.. I'm not sure if they do delivery over the internet, or via post, but they're a reputable university.

As I understand it, you can take the MA in TESOL year by year, by initially enrolling in the Grad Cert and then building to Grad Dip and MA. I like that idea, because sometimes life has a tendency of getting in the way of studies.

Thanks to all of you for responding to my question. I'm continuing to look for information. Combchick - thanks for the heads-up about the workload. I can only imagine how much work it will be...especially working part-time and trying to have a social life (on top of doing a masters...)
We'll see!
Thanks!

hi lozwich
I'm sure Charles Sturt would be fine - it's in Bathurst - a country town in NSW.
Regarding enrolling in the Certificate and then building up...
Well this is what I did.
I intitially did a Grad Cert in TESOL; then quite a few years later I decided to enrol in the Diploma in TESOL. I found however that it really wasn't much more work to actually enroll in the MA in TESOL, so that's what I did - and skipped the diploma level.
I in fact, half way through the course, changed over the programme to MA in applied linguistics. It was really just a name change, but I think it has worked in my favour, as it looks like I have two separate qualifications - one in TESOL and one in Applied Linguistics.
Maybe something to think about.
