Hello. I am a university graduate with no certification and two years of elementary school teaching experience. I am currently interested in entry level employment in either Japan, China, or Korea. I realize that without certification it will be difficult to secure a position, however I feel that I am ready to gain experience. I do plan on obtaining a certification after my first year of work. In addition, I am an African American woman. I would like to know if finding an entry level position will be possible. I have read many posts which are against using recruitment firms, however I am not aware of any other ways to get started. Any information would be helpful. Thank you for your time.

You should not have a problem getting a job in any of those 3 countries you've mentioned. You don't need a TEFL certificate either, but it does help and can separate you from other applicants. Your 2 years of experience, however, is more than most who start off. As a school teacher, you must have some teacher training right? To avoid a recruiter, just apply directly to jobs that are posted by a school, not an agency. I don't think all recruiters are necessarily bad, they could help you being new to this business and all, and give you info that a school does not.

China is calling!

They hire 18 year old high school graduates with no training and no experience. You do not even need to be a native speaker.

Sometimes a recruitment agency that is reputable is a good way to get that first job. Be careful though that they do not charge you a fee. If they ask you for money to place you somewhere, it is a sure sign that the firm is a bucketshop just looking for naive people to part from their money.

With your qualifications as an elementary school teacher, you would have no difficulty in getting a job anywhere in China. However, since you said you were African American, you may experience some initial reluctance on the part of Chinese to hiring you. You may be American and all, but some Chinese will see only the African part and think you are from the Continent and must therefore not be a native speaker of English. Your best bet would be a large city like Beijing or Shanghai.

China, it's worth the deafness
