Or, to put it another way, please don't post on this thread, scot47 (or Albulbul, for that matter).
Regards,
John |

No methadone so I have to post.
Some years back there WAS a programme but I think that ended when President Numeiry retired.
The programme recruited young graduates in Britain and gave them a job teaching in government schools all over Sudan. I know several people who got their first taste of EFL this way - including the notorious "Dongola John".
Now as far as I know opportunities for native speakers are very few.
Best to forget your idea of following General Gordon. |

| There are quite a number of Sudanese teaching English at all levels in the Emirates. Perhaps, one of them might reply to this post. I have been told by Sudanese colleagues that things are getting better in Sudan - whatever that means. |

The Sudan teaching programme finally ground to a halt in about 1988.
Nimeiri was toppled in 1985.
Dongola John - where is he now?
British teachers in Sudan - now gradually taking over the TEFL world. |

"Dongola John" got his nickname from an incident involving his posting.
After initial briefing by the Min of Ed in Khartoum he was despatched by train to Dongola. He got off at the first station after Khartoum muttering to his fellows, "Dongola, no way man !" He then made his way back to the Min of Ed to pleas for another posting.
I heard of him while teaching in Samarec in Jeddah. He had preceded me in that place. At one point after many months working in the refinery, he reportedly asked a colleague what exactly they refined in the refinery. When he was told it was oil, he expressed surprise that there was oil in Saudi Arabia. |

And who could forget Michael Desert Creep Asher and his ludicrous tales of adventure? |

| Well now you've really got me curious. Is there a whole pantheon of these known personalities in the TEFL world? |
