I have an Eiki CD/tape player I have used over the years and I'm wondering if I should bring it with me. The advantages to one of these is that it's a 5 post listening station so I can work with several students on listening exercises even in a noisy environment. The CD player can be slowed down with no distortion at all. The most serious problem (aside from size) is that I will need to bring a bulky voltage converter as it runs only on 120 volts.

Is this worth bringing along or not? I plan to do lots of privates.

Thanks.

Bulky? I got one at Radio Shack that is only two inches square.

You'll do better without the machine. I worked with a guy who carried around all sorts of AV equipment for half a term until he abandoned it.
Travel light (both in transit and after you arrive). You won't be able to use half the stuff you will want to bring with you.

Really. A school that wants you to use AV equipment will provide it. Privates want human contact more than anything else. A good lesson plan and some handouts with go a long way. Be creative and be interesting.

A student can do listening exercises alone at home on their computer.
Speaking and listening to a real person is why students want privates.

I agree with the above responses. The university students have listening classes and don't particularly care for them. Many or most listen on their own to BBC or VOA or other programs for English learners. They don't want more listening exercises. If you run into the unlikely situation where your machine would work out with say, an adult small group that wants listening drills, you could easily find equipment locally that would fit the bill.

OK. I am taking your advice and leaving it at home.

Thanks.
