Have any Canadians ever tried to get a Z visa while in the USA?

I'm trying to apply through the Los Angeles Chinese consulate, and see 2 potential dilemmas.

First, on the website, they ask for proof of visa status - but Canadians don't get visa stamps in their passport for US visits.

Second, the Chinese embassy in Canada requires a physical exam to submit as part of the application, but the Chinese embassy in the USA does not seem to require this. I'm going through with the physical exam anyway, at the urging of my school (Bengbu College), which has set me back a whopping 430 USD so far, ouch. Should have got the exam in Canada.

Will the Chinese consulate here issue my visa? Or do I need to go back to Canada for this?
