An interesting albeit narrow view of the industry.

As I have always indicated in prior posts; jobs in the tertiary sector, while having a nice title, are not the plum jobs people think they are and often the NET remuneration packages are lower than other jobs in the public or private sectors.

This is not just the case in Asia either. When I was working at a uni in Canada the average pay for an adjunct professor was less than that of a certified teacher with equal experience in the public school system.

Anything with the word "adjunct" attached to is immediately going to be a low-level position with a basic salary and most likely no benefits.

Whereas public school teachers normally have a union to keep them slightly above the poverty level and at least provide benefits.

Ya, but a tenure track position is not going to happen for someone with only a masters or ABD.

Canadian academic ranks are also different than those from the States.

Canada
Faculty appointments
Distinguished professor or university professor (distinguished professor emeritus, university professor emeritus)
Professor or full professor (research professor, visiting professor, adjunct professor, professor emeritus)
Associate professor (research associate professor, visiting associate professor, adjunct associate professor)
Assistant professor (research assistant professor, adjunct assistant professor)
Lecturer or instructor (sessional lecturer or sessional instructor)

*Assistant professor is the entry-level rank for non-tenured members of faculty.

Not if Chris Christie, Obama, Corey Booker, and Teach For America have their way.
