Have any of you been videotaped when teaching or have you had to cope with such requests? Can you share your experiences?

I've have, it can be off-putting for sure. Although I was only recorded for a student project, it still felt unnatural (I've never been one for cameras).
What is the reason for the recording? I've heard them been done for job interviews. Also for publicity for a school. I've heard of some people being paid for recordings, though I'm not sure if this is the norm. |

I've had it happen once. I was fortunate, the cameraman was very discreet. I forgot he was there after a couple of minutes. |

Whether or not I had a problem with it would depend on who is doing it, and what the recording will be used for.
Students filming the class so they can put it on Youku for example wouldn't be o.k be me. |

excellent question
I wonder what our legal rights are when it comes to videotaping requests as well as I wonder about how to professionally refuse such challenges |

As a teacher you have the right to manage the classroom, if you don't want someone to videotape it, stop them.
If you agree to do it for PR or something that is your business.
I'd imagine the reason for videotaping is a new series of on-topic KTV music-videos to be distributed throughout China.

In terms of the school recording you (or taking photos) that should be in your contract (as in if it is not, make sure it is next time). My contract states that they can only do so with my approval and can only use it during the period of my contract.
The reality of enforcing such terms is likely to be a bit different (as in they take a picture some time and use it without asking) but it is a good idea to have something like this in your contract so you can legitimately complain if they post items you are unhappy with.
As for students recording you generally in class, I would not be putting up with something like that as you have no control over where it goes or how it is used. |

Do your job and be done.
I know about the worries, but it's not as bad as it seems. Bring your own camera (cell phone) and record them.
I used to hate this stuff but I learned to "embrace" it.

I was going to post something to the effect of "what does it matter what they do with a tape of you teaching". But I can understand why some teachers wouldn't want to be filmed. |

I don't like to criticize grammar and spelling in forums as a rule. But OP, could you please edit the title? It's spelled video, not vedeo. It may matter if someone in the future tries to search the topic.
I've seen my students pull out phones and apparently take my photo or videotape me and haven't been bothered. If it did bother me, I would say something and they would no doubt comply, or get more sneaky at it. I wouldn't want a non-student in taping me, and that hasn't happened. |

I have had people want to come in and record and take photos and I straight up refused. They were journalist majors and they tried to just come in in the middle of class. I dunno what gives students the idea of "We attend this school so we can go to any class we want" I have many students that try to come into my class and use this excuse.
I probably wouldn't let them record my class because it makes everything awkward. It changes how everyone behaves and becomes unnatural. Interview me if you want after the class if you need a video......but don't come into my class and destroy the atmosphere. |

I was doing some side work at New Oriental once. I found a tape recorder going in my class. No one had discussed it with me so I turned it off. After the break I came back to find a student holding it. After I took it away and turned it off I asked the student about it. She told me the staff there asked her to record my class.
I had no issue with being recorded except that I wasn't asked.
And my contract made no mention of it. |

I started classes yesterday. I have seniors. Conversation classes. I told them that some of the time I speak too fast, and if they have trouble understanding me to please ask me to slow down.
I also told them to feel free to record the class because some times they may want to listen to the class again. They were shocked.
I told t hem it is a good thin to listen to the way I speak so they can copy it.
I did not want to tell them that I have trouble understanding some of them.
In a few weeks I will work on speach, but this is fine for me now. |
