Thanks for reading this - you're awesome.
Ok, so I quit my crummy job at a crappy language mill. They talked me into giving a month's notice. My residence permit is good until June next year.
So, if I don't get a job before the end of the month, my FEC will be cancelled. Does that mean my visa will be cancelled too? Will I have to get out of China?
Or, can I take a long holiday, and take my time about finding a new employer? (I'd sure hate to end up at another McSchool) |

Your resident permit will only be canceled if THEY request the PSB to do so.
if you get a new job then PERHAPS they can keep it active.
I have heard stories suggesting the the PSB need your physical passport to cancel it and stories saying they don't.
It all depends on your previous school's actions.
if they do nothing then nothing happens. if they take action then something may happen.
I heard a true story from my last school about a teacher who quit and was requested to go to the psb to have his visa changed. the school requested he go to the psb. He never went and because the school hated him for quitting they kept pushing the psb to take action. Several months later the psb found him outside his room and make him change his visa to an L visa. he refused to pay for the new visa and the school was held liable and had to pay the charge.
What do you wanna do? Stay in paradise and find a new job or just kick back in China for longer before you leave? |

The HR dept told me.
That's standard procedure, right?
At the end of a contract, they give you a release letter, reference, and cancel the FEC. If you have a new job, they can transfer the FEC. |

Standard procedure but everything isn't always the same here, right?
What you stated requires them to do work, and they don't always want to do that work. |

FEC are in fact cancelled at the end of each position and applied for again at your new position. The do not transfer but you may only have one FEC active at a time. Having your FEC cancelled is good for you, I would insist that as part of staying on for a month that you make sure they will not try to cancel your visa. Tell them you will get a new visa as soon as possible and do what you want until that time. |

I can only speak for Suzhou but now when your FEC is cancelled, you have to go the police station within 10 days and they cancel your RP. If you don't go in this time then you have to pay a very hefty fine. |

Resident Permit is a national deal. How can they enforce a fine when you can just go in and out of the country as you like?
The only way this would be semi enforceable is if both your old job and delayed second job both were in SZ. |

I agree with this. When I left a previous school on good standing, I told them to keep my visa open for awhile to give my new job time to convert it. I wouldn't recommend leaving a job until you have one to replace it. It's mid-sept already and it's gonna be slim pickin's out there. |

I know of a teacher who left Suzhou and then went to Shanghai. His school was not able to process his visa until he came back to Suzhou to sort it out and pay the fine. This still may only apply to teachers who have worked in Suzhou but if Suzhou is implenting this, other cities may be too. |

Suzhou seems to be the testing bed of lots of ridiculous crap.
