Hello,

First time poster, long time lurker. I have been living and working in China ( a few cities, same company) for 1.5 years now. At the end of my contract (end of February), I am going to work for another company. THe company I work for now is OK, but not great pay wise, I have never had any major issue with this company but I think it is time for a change.

I realize this is a subjective question but I would like to hear people opinions on what they think are the better schools to work for. I have been a teacher for over 10 years and have all neccesary work experience, management experience that should be needed so I would like to know which companies:

-pay the best
-stick to the contract
-treat employees properly
etc, etc.

This dosent have to be a complicated or heated discussion, I would just like to hear people opinions. it can be as simple as just mentioning a schools name.

Thanks in advance,

Hello,

I have not begun my job yet, but I do have friends who have worked for the Shanghai branch of Web International, and they said that the experience was almost wholly positive 7 months in, and that ther tourist visas were even successfully converted to z visas after less than a month on the job. They said that they liked teaching adults. They said the worst part of the job was that occasionally their schedules would change quickly without notice, and that their vacation days were mostly 3 day weekends spread throughout the year. They worked for 2 different branches in shanghai that they believed were corporate owned and not franchised.

My other good friend worked for wall street English for 1 year in
Shanghai and 1 year in Beijing. He loved the company (which doesnt have franchises) but said they worked him very intensely. He preferred Korea. He also said that the worst part about the job was that many of the older businessmen he taught were rude to him, but the younger men and the women were all nice.

Hello,

Just to add a bit, I've heard a few horror stories about web English franchises outside shanghai, though only online. My two friends experience at the one in shanghai may not be the same as the branches elsewhere.

What I've read about wall street says its more consistent.

In that case, it really depends on location and who you would be working under (including other foreign teachers). There isn't 1 company that would treat you better. It's just a preference as to what you individually like.

Personally, I prefer smaller schools that aren't established factories. You can get more of what you are seeking. The bigger schools have things already in place, and you are not likely to convince them of any changes.
