| Hello! I am thinking about coming to Thailand in April to teach English but I do have some questions. I have a B.A in religion and psychology with no teaching experience and no tefl certification. I am hoping to teach in a small greenish city....any suggestions? I'm hoping to save about 100 or 200 U.S dollars a month....is this possible?....should I get certified?.....(I don't have much money that's why I'm leaning against it)....thanks a bunch for your help! |

Your BA coupled with a passport from an Anglophone country will get you a job.
(If you are not from an Anglophone country then you can add a REQUIRED TOEIC score to your expected list of expenses.)
Keeping the job is another matter.
Do you need a TEFL certification to get a job = no.
Should you get a TEFL certification = probably yes.
(120 hours with observed practicum is the standard.)
Yes, you can probably save a bit of money after you get settled. You won't save anything in your first year (setup costs to bear and airfare costs to recover).

| You can easily save 100 to 200 dollars a month, but why would you want to save up that little? I was able to easily save 400 to 500 US dollars and even with daily coffee house visits for coffee you could save 500 to 600 US dollars per month especially if you're job gives you a free apartment and you don't blow your money on bars and Thai women or a Thai girlfriend. |

Hey all, since this should be a relavent thread.
How likely is it for a teaching position to offer free accomedations? (0-100%)
For example, in S.Korea, there is no point to take a job that does not provide free housing as 90% of the jobs posted provide this. |

Depends a lot on the where....
in BKK chances approach "0" but housing allowances, when offered, are usually enough to cover basic accommodation since large "key money" deposits aren't required.
In major tourist traps your chances are close to "0" and employers don't usually include a housing allowance. Pay is often lower as well.
Out in the less popular provinces (2 hours out of BKK and not toward a beach) your chances of decent accommodation being taken care of by the employer is about 50/50 and is negotiable.
