I am considering going to Bangkok to look for work. I have a CELTA and have recently completed a one year stint in Georgia.

One thing that interests me about Thailand is the opportunity to learn some Muay Thai. Would like to get in better shape after all the excess cheesy bread, pork dumplings and vodka in Georgia.

From what I have read on the net the advertised camps are in Phuket and charge 10,000 Baht a month for two individual lessons a day. Ideally I would like to do some training before and after work. I was wondering if anyone knew of the Muay Thai scene in Bangkok? In addition does anyone know whether 10,000 Baht is a reasonable price?

Thanks Smile

I can't really answer you and there are other people on this board who know more than me. But my last visit to the Khao San Road area of Bangkok had signs up everywhere advertising Muay Thai coaching. I could be wrong but I seem to remember 3,000 baht being the price but what that entails re coaching I have no idea. But anyway, you'll have no trouble finding a place to teach you--even out in the sticks there are local gyms that will train you.

Finding a place to learn / train in Muay Thai is about as difficult as stepping off a curb.

Unless you have a degree to go with that CELTA finding work that will allow you the financial ability and free time to train is another matter.

10,000 thb is what they charge tourists in Phuket or Pattaya. Neighborhood "gyms" just about anywhere else in the country are MUCH less than that (10,000/month you can have your own personal 1-1 trainer for 30 hrs/week).

Thanks for the replies.

Oh I should have added that I do have a Bsc Sociology from a good UK university to go along with the CELTA. The Georgia experience is pre-Celta however. Would 30,000 thb a month be a realistic expectation with my credentials?

I was hoping the 10,000 thb was for tourists. The fact that it's a lot less sounds very encouraging. So doing the maths, should I be able to get 12-15 hours a week with a personal trainer for under 5,000?

yes for the trainer.... and 30-40k thb unless you show up between Dec and Feb (slowest time for job hunting). The next 5 weeks or so should be good (mid year break and schools are looking for replacement teachers before the start of 2nd term).

I'm in the process of raising some start-up money so I can leave the UK. Thailand is leading the way at present but that December cut off is a concern. Do you know about the accommodation situation there? Would I be required to pay a few months deposit or would I be able to get a place with money for one months rent?

Do schools pay on specific days at the end of the month or would it be one month after I start? If it's a specific day then it may be in my interest to arrive half way through November for instance.

Thanks again for your help.

This Is Thailand. Nothing is written in stone.
You may find work in Dec. It is just harder to do (something to do with 10,000 back-packer / tourists looking to be "teachers" to extend their stay in the sun each winter).

Most schools pay on fixed dates each month. Some language academies pay weekly or monthly, it varies. If you get a job through some agency then who knows when their payday is.

Some rentals require deposits of 10,000-30,000 thb and stays of 90-days or more. Some are daily or weekly rate.

IF you have:
i) a legitimate degree with transcripts,
ii) some verifiable experience (take some photos of you in the classroom) and
iii) are a "native speaker" (have a passport from one of: UK, Ireland, USA, Canada, Australia or NZ.

then you will find work.

If you are missing one of i, ii, iii then good luck. You will need it but you should still find some work.

I tick all three boxes so hopefully I'll be fine. Thanks for your help.

This talk of Muay Thai has caught my eye. I looked at some English sites for MT gyms in Thailand and many of them have schedules that include day and evening training schedules. Are they primarily for full-time fighters who live in the camp? What about part-time training for those who work during the day? Forgive the ignorance on my part, just curious.
