I would like to ask the forum members to comment on my situation. If you feel that this topic has been discussed too many times, I would appreciate any help on directing me to the forum thread that touches on the same topic.

As I plan to go back to the United States next year, I'm looking for some career transition advice.

I've been teaching in Arequipa, Peru for the last 18 months and I'm planning to return to the United States in June or July next year. I'll be going back to my hometown, Kansas City when I return. I should add that the unemployment rate is much lower than the national average. To give you additional background, I had three different accounting and finance roles over four years for two different employers. One employer is an internationally-known custodian bank. The other was an international shoe retailer with stores in Latin America. I've been teaching English at all fluency levels for the past 18 months for a language center and a local university. I have a BA in Spanish and a MS in Accounting. Also, I am fully bilingual in Spanish and English.

My questions are the following:

How difficult do you think it will be for me to find a position related to sales or retail management? (I'm trying to avoid the accounting and finance corporate cubicle jobs.)

How long do you think it may take me to find a job in general given my mixed employment background in accounting and teaching?

What could I do to my resume to avoid looking like a person who lacks "stability"?

What could I say on a job interview to avoid looking like a person who lacks "stability"?

I appreciate any other job search tips you may have for those of you who have may the same or a similar transition.

This forum really isn't the best place to ask these questions since the focus is in TESOL. However, aside from doing a general job search, here are some suggestions to mull over:

1. Contact your university alumni association to see what career services are offered to alumni;

2. start networking with fellow alumni and others in Kansas who are in your target industry via professional face-to-face or online networking sites like LinkedIn;

3. check out www.kansasworks.com for resources on career changing, planning, and resume writing;

4. don't overlook job fairs in your area, especially those that include resume evaluation services;

5. conduct informational interviews with several professionals in sales and/or retail (do an internet search on this type of interview);

6. research current trends in your target industries;

7. volunteer as a Junior Achievement presenter/instructor once you return stateside (networking potential and looks good on a resume);

8. consider teaching a business English class at your present job; and

9. tailor your resume to highlight your interpersonal communication, presentation, and dual language skills as well as your ability to work/live in diverse cultures.

Other posters might have more to add.
