Hey guys,

I'm just finishing up 3 years in China and it's time to take a break, I'll be going to Thailand with

- 3 years experience
- White, Male, British
- TEFL
-MOD EDIT

How far will this go? Is a degree essential to getting a work permit? I'm looking to work outside BKK at first.. I will be going in early May, as I understand this is the hiring season..

Any advice on what my chances are would be great

MOD EDIT I am hoping that my experience will put me above a lot of the applicants with no experience looking to extend their holidays..

Without a legitimate degree your chances of legal employment with visa and work permit are now (under the current rules) effectively "0".

You can certainly find work with many agencies or language academies based on experience and a TEFL cert. It won't come with a WP or proper visa (means regular border runs) but you can get work.

The questions to ask are:

Is teaching in Thailand really worth it?

Are there any advantages of moving from China to Thailand?

Have you been there before? It might be best just to take a nice holiday, then return to teach in China.

Ok thanks, I guess I'll forget using the fake - Thais seem a lot more clued up than people are in China.

They've just had more practice at it (and dealing with dodgy foreigners who have tried it in the past). MOD EDIT

Probably, yes. (20-30k for someone with no degree/visa/wp vs. 32-45k for someone with a degree; for new, fresh-off-the-plane applicants).

The reason is that employer's don't have to pay any more for you. There are 10,000 more just like you who are also willing to work on a tourist visa because they also cannot qualify for a proper visa/WP and want to extend their stay in the LOS.

Be careful of dodgy employers who may take advantage of your visa status (some of the agencies come to mind) since your option for legal work is largely off the table.

IF you are good at what you do then like any business, increased income comes with increased business.

In 2007 they found out that a Canadian and a Brit had fake degrees at Kornpitaksuksa School in Bangkok. They were paraded before the press in handcuffs, and both did 3 months in a Thai prison (that must have been real fun) and were deported.

Postings and discussions involving fake degrees have never been permitted on this board.

Yes, there are boards that permit such discussions. This is not one of them.

If you see such discussions, do not contribute to them. Instead, please report them to the Mod Team.

Contributing to such discussions makes one part of the problem rather than the solution. This can result in negative ramifications regarding one's continued tenure here.
