10,000. I had just under ten thousand when I left last time. I had it in two envelopes taped to my upper arms. They felt the envelopes when I went through screening at the airport. They asked me what it was and I told them. They took me to another room and verified that it was cash. They didn't count it, though.

I don't remember if I filled out a declarations form to leave China, but I did have good info (correct, apparently). It could have changed (I left in February 2011). Some countries (Turkey comes immediately to mind) change their immigration and emigration rules quite regularly

Why not just stick in your carryon? When going through security I dump everything in the carry on and then lock it. it's easier.

Call me paranoid, but with that much cash, I don't want to take ANY chances. I want it on ME. Securely.

I once left the US with about $85,000 in USD in my carry on. When I got to my destination I didn't let go of my bag. On the plane it was in the compartment above me and had several locks on it.

In the airport there are sniffer dogs trained to sniff out cash. Crying or Very sad

So obeying the rules might be a good idea with this.

20,000 RMB or foreign currency equivalent is the maximum you can leave China with.

So in other words it is not optional to not transfer money to your home account while you work here unless you live large and spend all your money.

There is paperwork involved in bank transfer. You must produce payslips to prove you paid taxes.

I have had a couple of pay days now and am ready to start sending some money home. My employer refuses to give payslips. I can only assume it is because they are doing something funny with tax or a difference between the real and stated amounts of salary.

Since I will need a payslip to make a transfer (and I've read this a number of places) who can I complain to to get them each month? I don't speak Chinese and obviously the person at work who usually helps with things will not be willing to do this.

Ideas?

just take a chinese friend with you, have them do the transfer.
quick and easy. no payslips needed.

getting payslips will be a big ole hassle.

I have seen this issue a few times and I can only tell you my experience. I have a CCB international bank card. In the UK, I can take money from any ATM and therefore don't need to carry any cash when going home. Yes, there are charges and no I don't know how much but it is very convenient and safe. Also I don't know about the U.S but in the UK there is an agreement with "Link" and I would be surprised if there is not something similar in the U.S.
