Could anybody advise me re jobs in universities or other institutions in Japan where I might teach/lecture literature. I don't have a doctorate but have a good MA (distinction) and a bachelor's degree (first class) in English lit. I am awaiting publication this month of my first article in a reputable British journal.
I have elt experience but have never been to Japan. 41 years old.
Would there likely be much out there given my credentials?
With grateful thanks to anyone who might help.

Speaking from my experience, most universities hiring foreigners will ask for a Masters in TESOL English Linguistics, as the common courses taught are oral communication courses, with Literature being taught by Japanese professors. Anyway, to teach literature its likely you would have to be able to teach with heavy use of Japanese as students will not be able to handle things like theme, topics, allegory, character development etc in English only.
One publication is not enough to get a full time teaching position- a minimum of three publications is required. Part time positions are possible though with a good Masters degree. Japanese here are also unfamiliar with distinction and honours as that does not exist in Japanese academia.
The only places I know of that advertise university jobs are the JALT jobs page on http://www.jalt-publications.org/tlt/
and in Japanese (and the occasional English-language one) on http://jrecin.jst.go.jp |
