We should have left Karzai out to dry the moment he started rigging his elections, but instead we declare him a "Major non-NATO ally." (A designation once reserved for actual allies like Australia and Japan.)
Karzai is a nasty, reprehensible little man and I'm appalled that we continue to support him. That said, things could be a helluva lot worse, as an article linked from that very same one clearly shows. Which doesn't mean I think fear of the Taliban should lead us to support Karzai. By letting him quickly smash the fragile buddings of democratic and press institutions wherever they should arise (in the name of "stability," of course) we're not doing Afghanistan any favors, and he's a man who's all-too-happy to engage with the Taliban if it will let his warlord power base keep their grip.
I suppose it's too much to hope that your article might be the final straw that leads us to take a hard-line with Karzai. We didn't do it after the last election, and it would be hard to pull off now, unless the Afghan people take to the streets.

Dear Guy,
"again?"
Well, history does have this habit of repeating itself - especially since most of us seem to goshdarn dumb to learn from it.
