Has anyone had a problem bringing anything into the Kingdom using alcohol as a preservative? I have been using a herbal product preserved with 12-15% alcohol, and it says that on the label. I want to bring enough with me to last a while. (GNC doesn't have much of a selection for herbal medicine.)

I have seen mouth wash sold in Riyadh which stated on the label that it was over 25% alcohol. Obviously if one has the right connects, it isn't a problem, but all it takes is one religious fanatic to cause a problem. I have never had my bags searched here yet, but there is always that first time.

If by some slim chance your luggage were opened and the inspector mustered the energy to read the labels, odds are that it would be confiscated. Since it's medicine and not a bottle of scotch, there wouldn't be any penalty. You could just plead ignorance.

But most likely they will not open your luggage. Nowadays they only x-ray luggage without rifling through it as they did in the past. I would just mix the bottles up with other medicines so that they aren't so noticeable in the x-ray.

Interesting. The only thing I saw in Jizan with alcohol inside it (apart from my fellow TEFL teachers) was perfume/cologne. All the other usual products, including mouthwash, cough medicine, etc, were alcohol-free.

I flew in and out of Saudi numerous times, and only ever had my hand luggage checked once, so I wouldn't worry about it. Worst case scenario, in the unlikely event of it being an issue, is they would just take it off you.
