|
|
Hi,
I have to teach a class titled 'Supermarket sweep' It's an extra curricular kind of class and we can go out to a supermarket etc. The students are mixed level adults and I have 2 hours. I have no idea how to set this whole thing up. I'm thinking half the class will be classroom based and I'll talk about food groups, do some brainstorming, maybe a role play and then take them to carrefour. I'm not sure about the whole thing though.
Anyone have any ideas or done something similar before? |

Didn't the person who dictated this give you more direction? I don't even understand the name "supermarket sweep". What is the purpose of this lesson?
And where are you? How far from any shop? How are you expected to go there? ARE you expected to go?
Carrefour?? |

Talk about things in class... discuss vocab, etc. Divide the class into groups and give each group a list. Off you go to the supermarket, hope it's nearby. Have them take photos of the things on their lists using cell phones. Back in the classroom have the students report. Include different sizes, weights, and colors on your lists. The students should be reminded to speak English with their team members while they are 'shopping'. "Here is the bread. Which kind do we need?"
Have fun.

Sounds like something an admin person dreamt up... My sympathies to you.
However, if you are truly creative, then you may have a winner of a lesson on your hands. Good luck! |

Dear eihpos.
Supermarkets are also good for count/non-count nouns
how much fruit/how many vegetables, 2 ears of cornm a head of lettuce, etc.

Chances are that this will be perceived by students as an escape from the classroom. |

I like that...for a bit higher level student you can add numbers and prices. Give each student a different amount of dollars/pesos/euros/dinars/whatever and don't let them go over budget as they shop. |

Sounds like you could also possibly teach location related phrases as well (i.e. next to/above/below/in front of, etc.). It might help if you go ahead of time to see where things are located in the supermarket. |

There used to be a gameshow in which contestants answered questions then after did the 'supermarket sweep' whereby they had x minutes (depending on how many questions they correctly answered) to put as much shopping as possible into their shopping trolley in the gameshow's supermarket. |

Interesting to look at the aisles in the supermarket in the above clip. How wide they are! How easy it must be to go shopping there!
Could be a good way to measure level of civilization for TEFL teachers planning to move abroad: how wide are the supermarket aisles? The wider they are, the higher up in the civilization scale a country goes. : )
Sort of like the scale where the crappiness of the postal service is an accurate guide to the rest of the country. |

In 'my' adopted country, there used to be a specific number of carts available at our local 'inconvenience' supermarket. You were not allowed into the supermarket without a cart (regardless if you were shopping for one item or fifty). If there was no cart available, that meant the store was 'full' and you had to wait outside until someone returned a cart to the rack (also outside). It was a serious bummer on rainy days.... |

So how did the class go? I know it's a little late but you could do the class like the game show expect the questions would be about voc, grammar,etc.. give them time on their clock for each correct answer and then have them go into a supermarket and look for things on a list or recipe in the time frame they won. For higher level students inside of giving them the name of the food a description of it would make it more challenging. |
