I remember a lot from 1997 and 1999, but I'm hitting a blank on 1998. Did nothing major happen or is my brain mush? What do you remember happening in Korea back then?

Oh, yeah, I remember all about IMF. I do well with the REALLY big stuff. Very Happy

I wish I could access the old versions of this site or the old "issues" of the Korean Times or the Joongang Ilbo. That'd really help, but I can't find them.

I was thinking more along the lines of....North Korean ships firing upon South Korean ships (and vice versa) in the Busan Harbor in 1999. The North and the South Korean presidents meeting in North Korea in 2000. The families from both sides of the DMZ getting reunited for the first time in fifty years...first such sanctioned visit since 1985...that was in 2000. The two middle school girls getting run down in 2002. North and South Korea exchanged mail for the first time in 2001. The Daegu subway fire in 2003.

Ah, found something for 1998! South Korea captures North Korean mini-submarine in its waters. Nine crew inside found dead. I don't remember that though. I remember everything I mentioned above.

I never drank, so why is 1998 such a blank??

Well, there's your problem - How are you going to remember a year without some terrible drunken decisions burnt into your memory?

*laughs at Gaber* Laughing

Okay, found another....not historical, but certainly affected my life...made pc bangs even more annoying.... March 31, 1998...StarCraft was released. For years afterwards I'd get students who learned the majority of their English from playing that cursed game. Confused

I was here in 1998. What happened was that quite a few oldtimers fled the country because the won's value was going down down. Others who stayed just blew their money here since it wasn't worth jack in their home countries.

But one thing I remember was that the demand for English didn't suffer, though the job market was also complete crap. You heard about the rising number of divorces, broken families, homelessness and suicides, but I'd say most who stayed didn't suffer too much except in FX.

Remember the line-ups of Koreans giving/lending their gold to the government to help 'bail them out'? It was the oddest thing to see all these people lined up at the banks and post offices with envelopes loaded with gold chains and rings and watches...interesting though.
