Has anyone dealt with RBI? I'd appreciate any comments you might have. |

I know most newbies don't read my posts because it is just easier to find someone who says, "yup, they are good as gold," but...
Please let me repeat an old post of mine.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Really, when it comes to a recruiter, who cares?
A recruiter is nothing more than an introduction to an employer.
Hello Mr. English speaker this is Mr Hakwon owner.
Mr. hakwon owner, this is Mr. English speaker.
Mr. English speaker, here is the contract. Please read and sign.
School, here is the signed contract. Pay me.
Good bye.
-You are not paying them anything (or you shouldn't be).
-THEY DO NOT WORK FOR YOU! - They work for the school.
-They owe you nothing once you get here.
-They are not your friend.
-They are not your baby sitter.
-They cannot help you if things go to *beep* after you get here.
Beyond that it is YOUR responsibility to check the school out.
Do NOT trust ANY recruiter. They are like used car salesmen. They will lie and sell their soul to get the signature on the contract.
Do your own DUE DILLIGENCE in regards to the school or get burned.
Use the recruiters for what they are. Use more than one and keep going until you get what you want. There is no rush and there is certainly no shortage of jobs.
When it comes to the school - again - repeat - Do your own DUE DILLIGENCE.
1st - READ the contract over very carefully. If that doesn't scare you away then...
The best you can do is minimize the risk by talking to MORE THAN ONE of the foreign staff and ask POINTED AND SPECIFIC QUESTIONS (*when the boss is NOT listening over their shoulder). Don't accept non-specific answers and broad generalizations.
No foreign staff references to talk (directly and via e-mail) to = walk away now.
Accept NO EXCUSES for any reason. |

Well, obviously, as ttompatz said, do your OWN DUE DILLIGENCE about the school! He's certainly someone who knows what he's talking about, so listen up.
Anyway, I used RBI along with several other recruiters when I first got here and eventually took a job through RBI.
As ttompatz said, they were clearly not working for me, they were working for the Academies and that wasn't something I was quite aware of at the time. They were nice enough but there were a few things that irked me:
- Rarely answered my questions straightforwardly
- When I specifically asked about working in the downtown area of Busan they said that Busan has "several downtowns". And then only provided me with job offers on the extreme outskirts of the city.
- Extremely tardy in giving me information about meetings or the visa process. Sent me on my visa run to Japan with no hotel and with no assistance or information on finding one (I was a FOB newbie, I knew nothing. Although I will say I had a great adventure because of it, so 'twas a blessing in disguise!)
- I found out months later that they had posted my picture, my entire resume and my personal information on their website. It was in their "available to be hired" section when I was clearly not available (They placed me, for chrissakes!). It was a self-serving way of promoting their company, a la, "Look how many people that we represent, right now!!"
As I said, these things were irksome, but they're certainly not a condemnation of the agency. Be aware, ask tons of questions and if you don't get an answer, ask them again. I have since worked with a few other recruiters in Busan and if you PM'd me I would be happy to give you their contact information and a recommendation.
All the best.

This post DESERVES a locked sticky.
It's unbiased and practical information that anyone using a recruiter should wrap thier head around completely. |

I know the job recruiters play . . . I've read the posts. I'm just trying to find some job possibilities, and if I don't have to be the only person searching the web for opportunities, that'd be a great help!
So far my method is:
1) Find a Academy/Job/Hagwon/Position
2) Check out the info. surrounding it
- i.e. check out reputations with 3rd parties and contacts who have worked for them (or claim to have worked for them)
[which is difficult with so much bad mouthing on this forum -- almost every position I find has someone griping about it, but it is understandable]
3) Hopefully come to a reasonably, well-informed decision in the near future about accepting
I'm just interested in recruiters because I hate spending my time looking through listings of the same job being posted 5 million times, and not being able to refine my search to the location (Busan) that I'd prefer.
Ultimately, it is a person's own judgement that matters and, as with all information, one has to be cautious of bias with all sources!!! |

By GOOD recruiter, I mean that I'm looking for a recruiter who has a wide selection of jobs . . . Not that I'd want to find someone to blindly trust with my future. |

BEWARE!
RBI told me I was only teaching Kindi, which is why I took the job. It ended up being a typical Kindi-Ele-Middle School.
They gave me a contract while I was back home... I signed it... and then found out that RBI had signed the contract "for" them... NOT the school. When I got to the school, the presented me with a different contract, with different hours and requirements.
I complained to RBI, and they asked me to be understanding, and stick it out for a while. I tried. It was a hellish place to work. After being there 2 weeks, I put in my 30 days notice. RBI threatened me and said if I didn't keep my contract they would black-list me from every being able to work in Korea again, and would tell everyone that I was a bad teacher and a bad person.
I wouldn't go near them with a 10 foot pole,
unless I got to beat them with it. hmmm... tempting |
