| I worked at one near Seoul and it was very good. The only problem is they tend not to pay very much. Also, they are franchised so it's hard to tell what you are going to get. It just depends on if the owner is any good. However, I think they have a pretty good program for kids. |

SLP stands for S(lave) L(abor) P(rogram)
You can expect to be over worked and underpaid. Their typical contract reads 7200 contact minutes (90x80 minute classes) per month. Some of them have reduced that to 6400 contact minutes per month (still 80x80 minute classes). A typical hakwon worker has about 6000 contact minutes (120x50 minute classes) and a public teacher has 92x40 minute classes per month (3680 contact minutes) for the same wages.
1200 extra contact minutes means you spend 20 more HOURS per month IN the classroom. for the same money as a hakwon teacher doing 12x50 min classes) Even 400 extra contact minutes means an extra 6:40 in the classroom for free.
They do NOT allow block holidays. You get your time scattered throughout the year (1 or 2 days at a time) according to their schedule. It does NOT allow for any travel.
A few frenchises may have adequate resources but many/most do NOT.
I strongly advise against the 2 in eastern Seoul (Gangdong-gu) for a large number of reasons.
Check with current staff about conditions at the one you are applying to.
Also take a VERY close look at the contract.

If you've ever read someone kvetching about substandard teaching materials it's likely they worked at an SLP. They're very consistant about adhering to their very low standard for textbooks. They're not big on buying books, but if they do you can be sure that they'll be thin and woefully inadequate for whatever time frame you're supposed to use them for.
Some people on this board will say not all SLP's are bad, but what they won't mention is that most of them are. Check the blacklist and the greylists, whole lotta SLP complaints goin on. Not worth the risk or the hassle, unless you're super experienced so that you supplement poor materials til doomsday and saavy enough to spot a crooked owner. |

Kinda funny Tompatz because SLP this year has 3 blocks of holidays, 9 at x-mas, 9 during the summer and we had 6 during Chuseok. It was the same last year during the summer it was blocked all in one. Things do change you know.. In regard to the OP just talk to the teachers at the school and ask appropriate questions and make the decision for yourself. |

Damn, the whole country got 6 days at Chuseok. Many got 7 or 8. 3 days for Chuseok, 1 day for the Oct 3 holiday and the weekend. Nothing special there.
You got burned if you thought that was a holiday. They were your legally entitled red days AND I bet you still worked your 80 classes in October in spite of them.
SLP is a *beep* hakwon chain with a *beep* contract that burns newbies left, right and center.
You can work your 6400 contact minutes and I will work my 3680 contact minutes and at the end of the year we end up with the same net in our pockets. You work twice as long and twice as hard for the same jingle in your jeans.
You can enjoy your red days (National holidays to the rest of us) and think you got something special. I get them too.
Your summer holiday was 9 days. I was off from July 20 - Aug 16.
I get off from Dec 22 - Jan 8 and again from Jan 25-Mar1.
SLAVE LABOR PROGRAM and they SUKK big time. |
