There is a young foreigner in Busan named Amber (23) who needs O negative blood. (ONLY 1 in 15 people have this type)
FAST.
I realise you all are busy but this girl will DIE without blood.
What you need to do:
1. Go to the hospital (directions below) anytime from Monday morning.
Go to the 3rd floor to the blood bank and get tested. Even if you have the same blood type you will still have to have a test to check platlets. Then once all is well you will have to return to donate the blood.
2. if you have a blood bank near you go there and tell them about Amber and which hospital she is in they will phone and confirm and then you can donate. (hospital number: 0518906114)
-----------------------------------------------------------------
IT IS IMPORTANT TO ASK TO HAVE THE BLOOD SEPARATED as it is the platlets she needs.

---------------------------------------------------------------
1 WHAT TO DO IF YOU DON'T KNOW YOUR BLOOD TYPE.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
IF YOU DON'T KNOW YOUR BLOOD TYPE GO TO THE HOSPITAL BELOW AND GET IT TESTED ! IT IS TWO STOPS FROM SEOMYEON
SHE REALLY NEEDS IT.
Or call your mum OR call your doctor back home and find out.
2 WHAT TO DO IF YOU HAVE THE WRONG BLOOD TYPE
-----------------------------------------------------------------
tell your friends copy and paste this to as many people as you can - please.
please keep an eye on this page as we will be collecting cash to help pay for her bills - any amount will help, we know you are all saving - just skip a beer or two one night and use that money instead.
AS YOU CAN SEE FROM THE INFO BELOW
1 in 15 people have O- blood there's about 390 people on this site so ONLY 26 of you will have it - it's not that common - which is a BIGGER REASON YOU SHOULD GO IF YOU HAVE IT - and that u should find out what u are if you don't know.

We had a thread on here about this very issue a few months back - and a list of doners.
((just an FYI though, the stats are even lower for Korea)) |

Has anybody contacted the U.S. military? Not sure who the liaison would be, but I got to believe those guys would roll up their sleeves in a heartbeat. |

Back in '99 or so one of my co-workers died (in Jeonju). US military refused any aid. Their blood supply is for them only we were told.
If you want their help, do it unofficially...get to the soldiers themselves. Don't go through official channels.
Just a note: I know that we don't want to have duplicate threads, but why lock the two threads with the most descriptive (ie helpful) titles in favor of the one with the most vague title? |

(i) I'm seeing that this thread clarifies that Amber needs O Negative (O-) donors.
(ii) RE your question (on the other thread on Amber, now closed), check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blood_type - it has an easy-to-understand RBC Compatibility chart (scroll down to this heading).
NB: Blood donor-recipient compatibility issues can be complex (to this layman, anyway). And the info above is from wikipedia, so it should be used with caution, but it does agree with (i): it indicates that O- blood types can only take donations from O- donors. |

Yeah, I received a notification on it. I have O-neg, but I doubt I could go to Busan. |
bluelake, and other O- blood types:
see the OP, above: you can donate blood in hospitals in other parts of Korea, you do not need to go to Busan. |

A call to help English teacher
http://www.koreaherald.co.kr/
Korea`s expat blogging community is working to find donors of a rare type of blood for an English teacher in Busan.
Twenty-three-year-old "Amber," who has O negative blood, has a low platelet count. Viral encephalitis is suspected as the cause of her condition, and doctors say she will die without transfusions.
According to an e-mail sent out by coworker Erin Kerr yesterday morning, Amber was conscious at the time.
Kerr said three donors had been found as of yesterday, but more were needed.
Kerr said that the donors had been turned away because they had been in countries where malaria was prevalent.
She urges all expats to find out if they have the blood required. Only O negative blood can be used, but people with other types are asked to spread the news, as they may know a suitable donor.
Amber has been admitted to Inje University Pusan Paik Hospital. The hospital is near Gaegum Station on Subway Line 2, and the blood service clinic is open from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. More information is available at the "Visitors to Busan" group on Facebook.
Since Amber requires platelets, the site says that donors should have their blood separated in order to donate. Friends and colleagues are working to find a way for people outside of Busan to give blood.
Korean law requires donors to have lived in Korea for more than one year, Kerr says. This makes finding donors more difficult, since many Westerners in Korea are on one-year visas.
Some blood centers also do not accept blood from people who have lived in Britain in the last 19 years, due to fears of mad cow disease.
Type O negative blood is far more common in blacks and Caucasians than in Asians. One in 15 Westerners has O negative blood, whereas less than 0.1 percent of Koreans do.
Despite being less common than other types, O negative blood is highly sought after by blood services because it can be donated to anybody. However, people with O negative blood can only accept blood of their own type.

I wanted to repost this here, because that having to be in Korea for one year rule is something people MIGHT want to know about. I read the "extra" thread because wylies99 posted it and I'm glad I did. I don't know what my blood type is, but I do know I've been here less than one year! |

I passed this on to my mate in bundang and he sounds like he will get things sorted. We were joking about his rare blood type a couple weeks ago. I hope Amber a speedy recovery. |

I hope someone helps the girl. I probably have the correct blood type. I believe I am a universal donor. If there is still a need, I could step up to the plate, but it seems like someone has done this. I received a message before, but since it was in Busan I didn't respond. I live far from Busan, an hour north of Seoul.
I pray she will be okay... |

Hey OP,
How about giving us an update? It seems like there are some people who are willing to help, but are in a holding pattern... |

I have 0- blood. I have yet to donate in Korea since the red cross here has not screened their blood and at times has sold it for profit. Quite simply, I don't trust any agency to provide clean needles (some nurses just wipe the old needle and reuse to save money and a large number of people became infected with hepatitis a few years back as well as AIDS).
I would suggest going the synthetic blood route
