Good morning!

I have had a job offer from a recruiter and it is for a job in Daegu city
for 2.1 million won. I'm happy with that as I'm a complete novice to EFL teaching (though graduating this summer with a Linguistics -TEFL degree)
so I'm not expecting Rockerfeller style wages or lifestyle in exchange for my novice teaching skills.

I've read a fair bit about Daegu and it sounds OK. As an old 'un (35 years old! Shocked ) I'm not too bothered about the bright lights and big city, when you get to my age folks, the dry ice in the nightclubs gets into your eyes and you want to get the last bus home in time for the late night film on TV!

The school is located in downtown Daegu city, and I live 5 minutes away on foot. Is this a good or bad thing? Oh yes and another thing, can anyone recommend any good gyms with decent cardio machines?

Cheers in advance folks!

Here's our page on Daegu. It covers most things that you need to know,
http://wiki.galbijim.com/Daegu

My first gig in Korea was also a 5 min walk from downtown. Really helped make for a great year.

As for gyms, there are a lot downtown to choose from. However, California Fitness is a few subway stops away from you and that's the hippest gym to work out at (or at least be seen working out at). Great facilities and people-watching.

Great write-up chronic......

Daegu is probably the toughest city to live in climate wise in korea..
It is polluted as the mountains ring the city and trap the crap and it does get hot in summer due to the lack of wind.....

Before you sign any contracts, make sure your apartment there has an air conditioner. I lived there and my school would only pay for a fan. It was tough in the summer. The fan got me to sleep, but in the daytime it was so hot in my apartment that I didn't want to spend ANY time there. Just walking from my bed to the kitchen resulted in my body dripping in sweat. Awful, simply awful. Embarassed

That is totally untrue. Daegu has temperatures similar to other areas in Korea, differing by about 2 degrees at times. Why does this myth continue ?

And, as for pollution, unless you live in the industrial zones, you won't even notice it here.

What you have there eye are two pieces of info...average vs max. It doesn't work.

I couldn't tell ya if Daegu is hotter than Seoul or not in the summer, but at the end of the day, hot is hot, I don't care where one lives.

Daegu feels warmer because it is like a big bowl as the city and burbs are surrounded with mountains. Air gets trapped and the humidity goes through the roof....but either way, who cares...hot is hot....damn hot!

Good choice on the Gu...easy place to live, great waygook community, not hard to save some coin and see Korea.

Welcome aboard!
DK

They are comparable.
If daegu's AVERAGE temps are warmer than Seoul's MAXIMUMS, then it draws a clear picture for the winter.

You are quoting an average (combination of minimu and maximum) temperature against a maximum temperature..
only
According to the official korean metoerological association website www.weather.go.kr these are average MAXIMUM temps from 1971-2000 from both cities...don't believe check it yourself...

Daegu vs. Seoul
Jan: 5.3 vs. 1.6
Feb: 7.5 vs. 4.1
Mar:12.9 vs. 10.2
apr:20.1 vs. 17.7
May:25.0 vs.22.8
jun: 28.0 vs. 26.9
jul: 30.3 vs. 28.8
Aug:30.9 vs. 29.3
Sep:26.6 vs. 25.6
Oct:21.7 vs. 19.7
Nov: 14.3 vs. 11.5
Dec:8.0 vs. 4.2

Now granted Daegu is not too much hotter but with little wind relief while seoul(and indeed most cities lying closer to the coast) does get some wind it does make a difference...

i have been to daegu many times. it seems the pollution factor is the same to me all over the city...

Yeah, that's great. The temps you posted say exactly what I tried to prove. Temps differ only by a couple degrees. And, it' s warmer in winter. Thank you.

Also, if the pollution is so terrible here, why do i only get black phlegm coughed out of my respiratrory system when I spen a day in Seoul?
I've never had that problem at all in Daegu.

I've noticed the Jung-gu and Seongseo areas to be a little smoggy at times. But on the whole, Daegu's surrounding areas close to Apsan, Palgong, Chilgok, and out towards Gyeongsan. Everything is pretty fresh.

JB, remember that you've got the Changwon and the coast perspective rooted in you, so naturally the air of most inland cities in Korea are likely to be found smoggy or polluted. Every time I've been to Changwon, I can feel the dramatically different air quality you have to experience.

that is true...

I am not saying daegu is any worse than anywhere else livability wise and I am not trying to one-up anyone, just it does seem to be hotter there....

2 degrees is a lot. You're also talking about averages. The same mountains that keeps in the heat also keeps in the cold air on cool days.
If there was a standard deviation with your chart(and if you guys knew what that meant Smile) you'd see a difference.

Hey eye, this reminds me of the time that guy--was it DK?--claimed he could bike across Daegu in 20 minutes. Laughing

Then why is Daegu warmer than Seoul in winter, by a more than just a couple degrees, i might add?
If you think 2 degrees is a lot, step outside tomorrow morning, and try guessing the temp within that margin.
No cheatin now.
