I've noticed many posters on this forum claim to be English teachers but can't spell the word 'definitely'.

It's not 'definately', it's 'definitely'. Ok?!!!

If you are unsure about the spelling of a word, please visit a site like the one below.

Thank you. Don't tell me you don't learn anything from my posts! Shocked

Hah, I always do that one. I think I say it "rediculous." Maybe that's why.

I make mistakes with your/you're and there/they're sometimes. It's not because I don't know the difference. It's just fast typing without thinking. People who get peeved or think whatever about it are just being too picky.

-I have mixed feelings about the spelling issue. In one sense I think in a real paper, an article, something you have worked on, correct grammar and spelling are a must. At the same time, I think Interent posts are throw away...the English equivilent to fast food wrappers. Nobody really wants what they have written on Dave's preserved for all time do they?
-The worst are people who, after reading a long thread say something like, "You're Stupid." English has some of the strangest spellings known to any language. We even have to use a hypen in resign vs. re-sign. Why? Because English is a language over influenced by other languages, and has been forced to use a latin alphabet for its Germanic vowels. Not really a good idea in practice. Is it woad or wode woed? Is this possible in say, French or Russian? No. Vowels should be vowels, but in English they aren't.

I know a professor (who also writes books) who does lectures at popular universities in London and can't spell very well at all. This law of logic doesn't always work, ego trippers.

The first step to learning to spell is learning to read. And not by reading illiterate internet ramblings. Try reading books, stuff written by professional writers and edited by professional* editors.

The next step is using a dictionary.

Try this one:

I don't think this is true. In fact, I know that it is not true. Being a good reader does not make you a good speller.
