So I'm on line 2 around 10 pm Saturday night, reading about the evolution of birds. We're in the hongdae/sinchon/edae run so the car is necessarily filled with leggy young things.

40ish whitey, dressed like a database administrator, wearing a wine colored shirt I haven't seen since J. Geils cut its first album, strolls into the car. He notices a pair of leggy things. Slows down. Checks them out. Decides he's going to make the B-side of the pair his pick up attempt. Alright props for knowing which of the two is clearly out of his league. But at the same time, they're clearly about 23. He's 40ish with a burgeoning bald spot in back. Anyway, his opening line is something like "Hi! I love your style."

Yeah, well, I love 23 year olds with long legs in miniskirts and fk me boots too. And I like that the sun comes up every morning. He does this all in English. Luckily, or unluckily, the woman's english is pretty good. Amazingly she doesn't counter with "me no speakeeeee englisheeeee!"

He rambles on about how he's a professor (that is to say english instructor at a university) and he's been in Korea for ten years. Wow, ten years here and he's not found anyone and he's still hitting on random 23 year olds on the subway? And he can't open with some decent Korean?

Anyway, he hits all the high points. He loves Korea. He loves the food. The people are friendly. And the women are beautiful. He wants to know if she's going to a party tonight. Does she like to drink beer in Hongdae clubs? He hands her his card and exits the subway.

I try to hide behind my print outs about bird evolution, hoping all the people on the car that were watching a 40ish white guy trying to pick up a 23 year old don't think I'm his best buddy...

What is that, the 'spray-and-pray' method?
I thought we stopped doing that since Vietnam?

What are you doing reading bird handouts on the subway on a Saturday night? Disappointing. Cool

I thought the same thing. Laughing

At least the other guy was trying.

To tell me that when you're 40, you wouldn't be checking out hot 23 yr old ass, you are full of it.

He's probably being doubled up by the 2 hot ones as we read this. Sometimes all it takes is a card, and not only that, but the hotter ones probably felt that he was ignoring them and not giving them attention, which made them feel like he was more sincere and desirable. His lack of style may also represent that he is not pretentious and overly self conscious. His red shirt makes him seem passionate, and his ten years in university make him sound educated. They probably set up a "language exchange"

And all this time you thought it was a challenge or game...

Attn:
40ish Whitey. I have reviewed your work and your grade is as follows:

A+ for balls
A- for effort
B for planning
B- for overall presentation
C for results and conclusion

Comments: A fine effort, however there are contextual elements of your work that need to be addressed before your next project.

I didn't quite get the joke until thinking about reading the "bird guides" on a Saturday night. Knitting would also have worked but I like it.

I've done the subway pick-up too. I'm not 40 (mid twenties) and no bald spot (I have all my hair and damn well intend to keep it), but I can't blame the guy for trying.

The fact is that even the most successful lady's men get rejected alot. His technique may leave a lot to be desired, but if he keeps trying and learns from his mistakes he'll get better.

Also, his age and lack of hair shouldn't matter- after all, don't women always say they're 'not shallow like men' and 'don't care about looks, only about inner beauty'?
