Does anyone else on here live/teach in Hongseong? I'll be there in January and would like to know the good and bad (your version) places to go. |

here is the english site for the town...
http://hongseong.go.kr/english/
According to that site it is 2 hours to seoul and about 2 hours 30 minutes to daejeon
The actual town itself has about 38000 which is the western equivalent to a town in size about 5000 back in the west...it is very small in korean standards.
there will be no creature comforst at all...while i would like to live in a place like this i wouldn't recommend it to somebody coming over from the west. Would be a massive culture shock |

According to that there's over 90,000.
While in the west, 90,000 would be big enough to have a bunch of malls, movie theatres, and probably a minor league baseball team, over here that's still pretty small. Basically just blocks and blocks of the same thing: Korean restaurants, laundries, mom and pop convenience stores, handjob stores, Korean restaurants . . . (repeat).
But, 2 hours away from Seoul isn't that bad, and you'd be close to Suwon and Cheonan, which would take care of your shopping needs. There are some advantages to country living, although I don't know if I'd like a town like Hongseong. I either want really small (like my place now) or really big (like Seoul and its surroundings). |

Well, I live near Hongseong and have actually been there. I have played a few baseball games on the baseball field at the high school. There is a Domino's in Hongseong and maybe a McDonalds. I have not really been anywhere in Hongseong. The people I met were friendly. I imagine it is like my town.
As stated before, many convience stores, resturants and Korean style bars. You cannot meet people in Korean style bars. People just sit in big booths with their friends. Are you going to be working at the high school or elementary school?
It cost 7,500 Won from my town to Yongsang station in Seoul. So a ticket from Hongseong would probably run you 8,000-8,500 one way. You could go to Seoul every weekend if you wanted.
If you have any more questions just ask. |

To get to Hongseong you want to go to Yongsan station in Seoul when you arrive in January. Then take the Janghang line to Hongseong. |

I teach at a university that's about 30 minutes away.
Hongseong does have a train station, so you can be at Yongsan, or Yongdongpo station in just over 2 hours.
Personally, I've only been to the train and bus stations so I don't know much about the place. |

Yongsan and Yongdongpo are train stations in Seoul that are on the Janghang line. I think that there are 5 train lines in S.Korea. |
