Hi, I would like to ask what specifications generally come with that price range in Korea? Not too clued up with the latest tech trends. I am looking to buy a new one in Daegu. Thanks |

Store bought, like an LG or Samsung etc?
You'll get about 2 ghrtz dual core processor, 13 - 15 inch screen, 2mb ram and a no frills graphics card, no frills cd/dvd drive etc.
Fine for genral use of course.
You really wont get much for that in Korea and would be better off buying one in the States though.
At Yongsan in Seoul you can get good deals on ex-display models or maybe a custom built for around 700k but you'd still get better for less money than that in America. |

You should be able to get something like the Lenovo g460 (14" laptop) for that price (ranging in price from 700k to about 1.1 million.
At the low end it will have an Intel i3-370 cpu (2.4ghz - released in July 2010) win7 home premium, 500GB HDD, 4GB RAM and intel graphics.
At the higher end (1.1 million) it will have an Intel i5-560 cpu (2.67ghz - released in Sept 2010), win7 home premium64, NVIDIA GeForce 310M 512MB graphics, 4gigs RAM and 500gb HDD.
You can find them in the terminal building (the blue one) at Yongsan as well as the left hand hallway of the seon-in plaza (the place with the gigabyte sign on it).

Do you reckon the Lenovo is a better bet than a a Korean made Samsung? My 3 year old Toshiba Satellite is acting up screen going all fuzzy) and opening it to try to clean the filter proved fruitless. I'm going to try a repair shop, and then maybe just buy a new laptop soon. F---ing things never last more than a few years. |

I have been a fan of Lenovo and IBM for a long time when it comes to laptops. The main reason is the global after-service that I have received when required.
I had bad luck with HP and Sony over the years when it comes to getting aftermarket service outside of the country of purchase.
As far as choosing one brand over another for performance vs price I have found that typically there is NOT MUCH difference. The market (globally) is too competitive for there to be a large difference in price between comparable models.
I had a Samsung laptop (SENS640) way back when and had no complaints with the computer or the service.

With the i5-430m? It is about right and is a decent machine for general computing use.

Hey Ttompatz! I actually have that second computer with that exact spec (minus 2 gigs) sitting right next to me. You should note though, that the video card is actually 1gig now.
OP, I can PM you the name of the store that sold me my computer at Yongsan. Thing is, I was able to get them down to 900,000W just by giving them cash and getting 2gigs of ram instead of 4 (I'll just bump it up when I feel the need for the speed increase). |

Hi everyone
I'm also in the market for laptop in Korea. I'd rather not buy one here, but I need one for work.
I don't do any gaming.... but I'll have to run Microsoft Office and Photoshop, so I guess it should be fast. I'm not up on current trends either, so I would appreciate any guidance at all.
Also, if I go in person to Yongsan, is it a problem for them to install Windows in English?
Thanks for your replies...

Again, the Lenovo machine (listed above) is a decent work horse and comparably priced to North America.
Someone can correct me (I am not currently using win7) but I think you can easily change the language settings (input and menus) to English without a new install.

Thanks, Ttomatz. I will check out that brand of laptop.
About Win 7, I would think it would be easy to change, but someone told me that you cannot change it easily with just the Home edition. You'd have to have the premium edition. I managed to change the language on Vista by finding a program called Vistalator, so I was hoping Win 7 would be as easy. |
