Erm.. millions of not so well to do people living in developing and not so developed countries? Not all can afford to buy iPhones, Galaxy S', or other "real" smart phones.

It's all about the volume and I'm sure Nokia will sell millions of these things.

But hasn't it been like that for many years now? The largest slice of the money they make is from inexpensive phones sold in places like China, India and Africa. Right?

Nokia has failed to reach its full potential in the U.S. A thing that may, or may not, change now that Mr. Elop was put at the helm of the company and Mr. Vanjoki (director of the Mobile Solutions) resigned.

Not everyone wants to be owned by Apple or Google. Apple has fans, Google has subjects.

Symbian 3 is going to fail.
Windows 7 mobile is going to fail.
The New Palm phone already failed.

I don't get that Nokia wants to be the "budget phone".

What is the point is putting a smart phone for poor people? If you are poor, what would you need a smartphone with Email, GPS, and other capabilities? Would you even be able to afford a data plan?

I have a nokia 5800. it's obviously a low end phone and can't hold a candle to some high end android phones.

however, i mainly use it, and wanted it, for 3 things; music, video, and e-books. 2 out of 3 aint bad (video requires conversion from avi to mp4)

the internet experience is adequate but not great. very few decent apps available.

fraction of the price, and for someone like me on an E2 who can't get a galaxy S on contract, that's real nice.

Nokia's still the #1 maker of mobile phones in the world and still very popular in Europe. They're not going to jump into bed with Google and hand over that much control unless they're completely desperate.

That said, I agree that Symbian is a dead-end. Some companies just aren't cut out for developing software. Props to Samsung for acknowledging this and not packaging another horrid, non-sensical ui with their smartphones.
