I've been offered to teach with Chilgok Wonderland school in Buk-gu Daegu. Does anyone know about this school or its reputation. I looked for a thread but couldn't find one...
thanks!

I cannot speak for the reputation of the school but it would be a good idea to ask foreign teachers questions when the employer isn't listening.

Working Hours

( 1 ) What time does your workday begin and end?
( 2 ) When do you start preparing for classes and how long do you prepare for them?
( 3 ) How long are the breaks and does your employer allow you to use them freely?
( 4 ) How many classes do you teach per week?
( 5 ) How long do you teach per class?
( 6 ) How many students do you teach per class?
( 7 ) How many students attend the school?
( 8 ) How many teachers, foreign and Korean, work at the school?

Wages/Overtime

( 1 ) Does your employer always pay the teachers on time?
( 2 ) Does your employer pay overtime wages or avoid paying them?
( 3 ) Does your employer pay in cash or by electronic deposit?

Payslips/Pay receipts

( 1 ) Does your employer provide teachers a pay receipt that clearly defines deductions from your monthly salary for (1) pension (2) income tax (3) health insurance?

Health Insurance

( 1 ) Has your employer provided you with a health insurance card?
( 2 ) Does your employer pay contributions for both parties to the National Health Insurance Corporation?

Pension

( 1 ) Does your employer pay into the Korean Pension Plan?

Income Taxes

( 1 ) Does your employer deduct the correct amount for income taxes from the teacher's monthly salary?
( 2 ) Does your employer pay deductions from your monthly salary for income taxes to the tax office?

Severance Pay

( 1 ) Does your employer always pay teachers their severance prior to/upon completion of their contract?

Living Conditions

( 1 ) Was your apartment clean upon arrival?
( 2 ) Were you provided with all the furnishings as stated in your contract?
( 3 ) Were the furnishings/appliances in working order when you moved into your apartment?
( 4 ) Are the bills in your name or your employer's name?
( 5 ) Does your employer respect your right to privacy?

Paid Annual Leave

( 1 ) When and how do you use your paid annual leave?

Dismissal

( 1 ) Does your employer have a reputation of firing teachers for the sole purpose of not paying them last months wages, airfare and severance pay?

Financial

( 1 ) Is the school in financial trouble?

Discipline Methods

( 1 ) Is your employer abusive towards the students or teachers?

Paid Sick Leave

( 1 ) Have you used a day of paid sick leave?
( 2 ) If so, how did your employer react?
( 3 ) If teachers use a day of paid sick leave, does your employer require them to work another day to make up for the hours missed?

A search for wonderland will bring up lots of good stuff.

Be very careful, read the contract carefully. Look at a few of the wonderland contracts in the contract sticky thread. IF that alone does not scare you away..... then

The chain (without exception for any franchise branch) has a well deserved reputation and they earned it with repeated actions over a long period of time. Check their references VERY CAREFULLY and check MORE THAN ONE. Don't believe anything a Korean working at the branch says.

You have been forwarned....

Avoid all wonderlands
A few months ago , I read ; in the news paper , that Wonderland is slowly going out of buiness cause they are having so much trouble in finding teachers. The reason they are having so much trouble finding teachers is cause they are the worse of the worse

Wonderland has a bad habit of making the teachers lie about the working condiitons to new potential teachers.
Years ago ,I had a friend working at Wonderland , and as she was finishing her contract , the owner told her she couldnt leave ( he threated to keep her bonus and plane ticket) until she found a replacement. My friend knew that no one would take the job ,once they knew what the working condiitons were like ,so she had to lie

Yes, I lived in Chilgok last year - it is about 1/2 hour from downtown Daegu by bus. A really nice, quieter, modern suburb north of Daegu.

As for Wonderland, I recall 4 teachers leaving from there before their contracts finished. I do remember 1 kiwi girl who finished her contract. The director also owns Reading Town (another hagwon) just upstairs from there, so I heard she was pretty disorganised and got some staff to work in both hagwons. I also recall 1 (crazy) girl having to live with the director until her own accomodation was sorted out. NOT the start you want!!

That's about all I can recall of Wonderland in Chilgok from 2007 - hope it helps Wink

As I've said before, suppose there was an airliner taking off with 100 seats and you knew that:

10 seats were going to fall out of the plane mid-flight
10 passengers would get food poisoning
10 would be seated next to violent alcoholics
10 would get vomited on
10 would be next to screaming babies
10 would be next to Christian evangelists who couldn't shut up
10 would be seated next to morbidly obese people
10 would get mistakenly arrested by the air marshal
10 would have seatbelts that refused to release them upon arrival
and 10 would arrive safely at their destination after a mildly unpleasant ride.

Would you get on that flight? If not, you'd be an utter idiot to try your luck with a Wonderland. This chain has beat out some very, very stiff competition to earn it's place as the hagwon chain with the worst reputation in Korea.

Don't believe a word that a foreigner working at the branch says unless it's negative. If it's positive, you could very well be getting suckered into the place so that foreigner can get out of a bad situation himself!

Take all the criticism of Wonderland with a pinch of salt, every branch is different. Yes, the majority may be dodgy but most say that the majority of Hogwan's are dodgy with only a handful of sound chains.

My ex-girlfriend and a couple of mates worked at that Wonderland in 2005-6ish and they said it was ok, there were the usual Hogwan gripes but nothing severe. It may have changed a lot since then though, the best thing to do is try and speak to one of the teachers there and get there e-mail address -so they can tell you what they really think . I worked at Siji Wonderland in Daegu from 2005-6 and had a good time, the boss went out of his way to help us and we had good co-teachers, were always paid on time, air-ticket refunded in the first month, decent apartment etc. Perhaps it's the only one like this and I got lucky. Maybe Smile

I had friends who worked there a few years ago. From what they say this is a good Wonderland.

It's still a Wonderland though.

Ansan Wonderland did the same to a young Canadian guy who told me all sorts of stuff to get me to work for them. I was going through one of my periodic episodes of insanity and believed everything he said to me.

It's owner, Tom Choi, is fairly slimy and got his a$$ beaten by a young Kiwi man in his employ for sexually harassing a female teacher at the school.

Sorry for my digression.

Wonderland Pochon (middle of nowhere, north of Seoul) has payed me late over 5 times, 5 Korean coworkers quit after never receiving paychecks, had me working at another hagwon next door, will not pay me severance unless I find a way to force them (even then...maybe), has me work with kids with mental problems, had me teach with no text books for months, and the list goes on.
