Drinking themselves into oblivion and skipping out on their generation's war, just like Pappy!
But in England, service has honour, no like most scummy US politicians whose children are hiding.

CAMBERLEY, England (Reuters) -- Britain's Prince William, eager to draw a line under a decade of conspiracy theories about the death of his mother Princess Diana, graduated as an army officer on Friday to launch his military career. |

Major General Roberts, on whether William would serve in a conflict zone, said: "I don't think it would be sensible to rule any of those things in or out." |

Britain's royal family has a long tradition of serving in the armed forces. William's uncle, Prince Andrew, was a helicopter pilot in the 1982 Falklands War against Argentina. |

But Andrew was the spare, not the heir.
It doesn't work the same in a representative democracy. (As obsessed with America as you are, you should have known that.) To make your analogy work, you should have referred to Brother Jeb. |

You're asking for trouble with this, Octavius. The royal family are an anachronism. Better for this to come from me than from an American Current Events warrior. |

Britain's Prince William (R) breaks into a smile while his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II reviews the new cadets during the Sovereign's Parade at The Royal Military Academy in Camberley, southern England. She also served in the military during WW2 (well, she enlisted in 1945). She was a truck driver in the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS). She didn't get any preferential treatment, so she served as a non-commissioned officer.

The Queen and family reign but do not rule or make policy as part of a hereditary royalty. Would it not be more relevant to ask about what Tony Blair's children do to honor their country?

I'm more curious to know what will be his wife's next blunder.

By the same token, the American president is the ceremonial head of government and has no legislative power to make laws (although he can veto). It is congress that passes the laws. It is congress that allows the president to make war.
As the future ceremonial head of government, Prince William needs to be commended and should be an example to the American members of congress. William might not see combat but he'll certainly endure danger. Of course Bush was not exactly fully safe as a pilot in the Air National Guard. It was certainly a high risk job. |

OMG. You have to be kidding.
He was working on a campaign trail (snorting coke and getting drunk) and was a no-show for National Guard duty.
The most pathetic dog of war ever. |

To my knowledge, the president has the personal authority to declare war, but congress has the authority to finance war. Anyone know about this?
Still, it is an elected position which involves decision-making and responsibility at the highest level. As opposed to a hereditary monarch with a funny wave and bad teeth who watches horse races and attends the odd charity function.
I know my argument seems perverse-- that the president of the USA shouldn't be judged by the actions of his children and a superfluous royal should, but I'm not making that argument. I'm only saying they're apples and oranges.

He did train to be a pilot and he did, for a time, actually fly. There was risk there. |
