So, I have this one class of 3 students, and one kid is about half the size of the other 2. Well one of the bigger boys is a good kid and doesn't cause any trouble but the other, Brad, picks on the little guy, Mathew, pretty much non stop. I had to banish Brad to the other side of the room once or twice cause it was so annoying. Anyways, Before the class started today I walked in, dropped off my books and saw Brad picking on Mathew. Nothing new there so I go get a drink of water before the bell rings. I come back and what do I find but Brad doubled over in the famous "OW MY BALLS" fetal position with Mathew looking quiet pleased with himself. The kid had the bigger boy in tears from nefarious shot to the nads. Now, being the teacher I stopped for a second and felt some punishment probably was in order but then I thought, screw it, kid had it coming. So, I told Brad to walk it off and sit down. The whole scene made me smile on the inside for hours though. Maybe outside too. |

The yarbels should be off limits, IMHO. |

I would normally say that is dirty pool but the kid had no chance in a fair fight. Its a dog eat dog world we're living in so I can appreciate the do whatever it takes attitude Mathew showed. He made his point, coulda been beating him while he was on the ground too, ya know? Showed some restraint. |

Are you sure that you should be teaching children? |

Well, I am taking the stance that I didn't teach anybody anything other than teacher doesn't care if you kill each other. The rest of the lesson of the story is open for the kids own open interpretation. |

I'm with shifter on this one...
In any fight there are really only 2 rules: 1) protect yourself at all times; and 2) there ain't no other rules.
I teach my own kids (my own brood, not students), fighting blows- don't ever get involved in one if you can help it...BUT, if one gets started, end it as fast and efficiently as possible, whatever it takes (why get punched in the face a dozen times by a bigger bully simply to avoid HIS "yarbels?").
By the way, if you're going to impose rules in a fight in school, how about weight classes? |

I have a special needs kid in one of my grade 1 MS classes and I really have no idea just what her mental condition is. She looks about 8 or 9 years old and the first time I saw her I thought one of the students had dressed her little sister up in a school uniform and brought her to school. I pretty much let her do her own thing so long as she's not disturbing others, colouring or doodling or whatever. I have 31 other students I have to keep focused and there's no time for special attention for a kid of undiagnosed disabilities.
Anyways, yesterday we were watching a movie (last week of classes and not much point in trying to do anything serious) and out of the corner of my I saw her give another girl who was standing in the back the middle finger. The other girl, who's not big but a lot bigger than her, walked over and pinched her, and then the really tiny girl looked over at me with an expression that said 'Ouch! That hurt; aren't you going to do anything?' I just looked over to the girl who pinched her with an assuring glance that said 'thanks for saving me the trouble - what did you expect, kid?'
Had it been the other way around I would have stepped in but there are times when it's better just to let them sort out their own differences. |

Just leave 'em to it. But, if it starts to become a regular thing then I would step in.

Shifter,
I'd be interested to know if the bully continues to bug the little guy after what happened. Keep us posted. |

Only if he can't reproduce.
Today, I was outside and saw a boy stick his head out the door and say something rude to a girl. Quicker than you think, she had his hair in her hands and was giving it a hard enough yank that he was forced to follow her until she let go. After she let go, she calmly went on walking.
It's worth adding, I did yell at her over what she did, even though he was a stinker. I then walked over to him and told him he got what he deserved. |

I'm sure he should be. Standing up to bullies is a commendable thing. |

Oh by the end of class they were back in there usual, "Don't speak korean" "No, you shut up" argue fest. Seems more things change the more they stay the same. |

I don't think there's anything wrong with delivering your own sense of justice in the classroom, and just because the kids sort it out themselves from time to time, doesn't mean you are Satan for not getting cranky over a kick in the nuts.
The kids in my school ultimately have much more power than the teachers and, in terms of bringing delinquent offenders to task, justice is rarely done.
But I always know in advance which earnest little munchkins will be treated sympathetically on test day and which vulgar, violent little bullies should have been less obnoxious in class....
Well done little Bobby, you're thick as pig poo but you are a happy, smiling little pumpkin, so you get 90%.
Whereas you, Hagar, you pint-sized maniac, though blessed with a brain, pronounced "cabinet" as "cabinut", so you lose 80%.
Tch... |
