|
|
I just found out in the middle of last week that I'll have a whole week off next week...I'm kinda pissed on the short notice that I couldn't collaborate anything with friends that don't get the whole week off, but here's the deal. I always wanted to check out Thailand...I'll probably be going by myself. Any help on where to get the cheapest tickets, where to stay, what to look out for, where to go, etc...would be helpful.
Thanks for anything you can provide... |

Check it out! Check it out!
Thailand is very nice.
You should check out Koh Samui and Ko Phangan on the Eastern peninsula. Ko Tao is nice as well.
They're really nice islands and you can easily fit in some R&R down there in a week or so.
The Food alone is enough reason to visit Thailand!
Check out the Lonely Planet Thorn Tree bulletin board. Lots of info there and on other countries:

Wherever you go in Thailand, try not to spend more than a day in Bangkok. You have been warned... |

Nana Plaza is marked.
So are Patpong and Soi Cowboy.
CAUTION!!
Otherwise you'll be fine.
Enjoy the museums and river boat rides. |

As soon as you arrive in bangkok, don't leave the airport: get a flight directly to one of the islands, save you a lot of time. Koh Samui's a good start because of the beaches and bars: and then if you want something a little quieter you can catch the ferry to Koh Phan gan from there.
Depends what you're after: if its not sea and sand, head by train up to Ayuthaya (temples) and on up to Chiang mai (mountains and trekking).
Krabis a good option for coastal cliffs, beaches, and rock climbing. |

Actually, this question would be best posted on Thailand's #1 ESL board, www.ajarn.com . The guys that are living in-country would be be able to help you with specifics a lot better than here. |

Nah way there's dozens if not hundreds of people on this board who've been to Thailand as tourists. A weeks vacation is hardly worth bothering the ajarn crusties over.
I'd be happy to give a bunch of info but right now it's 2.00am. Tomorrow tomorrow. |

I just got back from two weeks there. We went to Phuket, Krabi, and Ko Phi Phi. Ko Phi Phi was beautiful - they filmed "The Beach" there. Beautiful water, tons of bars and clubs, if you're interested, but you can also avoid them, if you like. The island has no roads, and you can walk to everything (no need to rent a moped). We stayed at the far end of the island, so it was about a 20 walk to the main beach, but our "resort" had its own beach, plus a swimming pool if you wanted. The atmosphere in Phi Phi was really laid back - I can't say enough good things about the place.
Anyway, wherever you decide to go, if you're going to arrange accommodations when you get there, don't just walk into a place and ask their rate. Go to a travel agents (there's lots of them in all the major vacation spots) and ask what they have for the area you want to stay - usually you can get 200-300 baht off the price they'd quote you if you walked in to a hotel. We stayed in a 1,300 b a night bungalow for 1,000 b just by going to the travel agents 10 min down the road, and having them book it.
Good luck! |

Hi, I'm not trying to make the above poster angry, but I think 1,000 baht is a lot to spend on a bungalow, just to give the original poster an idea of prices. Unless you have a group of 4 or 6, 1,000 is a high price. I'm wondering if that island costs are higher because the movie was filmed there and they're trying to make more $ because of that?
Most nights will cost you around 500-600 baht. (well, unless you want air conditioning or something like that)
I stayed on Koh Pahgnahn and we had a King size bed in our bungalow and attached bathroom/shower and it was 500/night.
Anyway, I'm sure you're doing tons of research on the Net, so you'll run across this info somewhere else.

Hi, I have now been in Suwon for 2 days after moving up here from almost 2 years in Phuket. I have stayed in Phi Phi numerus times and at this time of year paying a 1000TB is big living. I stayed there around this time last year and was paying 200TB a night in a simple room, fan and cold shower, and I could go from my front step and be in the water in less than a minute.
Phi Phi is still my favorite place. But if you only have a week, limit your travel time and just do Phuket, it has everything, but be warned I was on Kata beach thursday and you could play around in the waves but the sea is rough. Also, this has been a wet rainy season, on seconfd thought if you want a beter chance of sun and beach time hit Samui. |

Sorry! I didn't mean to imply that was the average price was around 1,000 b - we were, er, 'living large' - we didn't mind spending it, as it was a nice place and we'd saved a lot of money in anticipation. But prices really ranged there - I saw anything from guesthouses for 100 b a night to The Phi Phi Princess Resort, which was charging around 2,000 b a night. Simple fan bungalows with cold water were around 400 b, and they looked pretty nice, as well. You can really take your pick there. |

Hey,
I totally agree with ZyZyfer's warning about Bangkok . . .
I went for almost two weeks, spending most of my time in Pattaya and Koh Samet. I would advise spending most of your time in Koh Samet, since you only have a week. In Pattaya I stayed at the Woodlands resort-very nice and affordable. On Koh Samet I stayed at the Ao Prao resort-also very nice and affordable. If you'd like to know more about these two particular places, just send me a private post and I'll supply you with phone numbers. I hear it's hard to get anything out of Korea next week because of Chuseok, but if you do-you'll really enjoy Thailand.
good luck |

thanks for the info...is there any particular place that's good if I just wanna lay on the beach during the day and kick it with some girls at night...or is this pretty much anywhere I go? Also...why the warnings on bangok? Dangerous? Staying there for over a day is bad because____...I'm trying to just get a couple places in mind and since traveling is cheap...just hit a couple places....of course I still haven't got tickets yet...working on that tomorrow. Also, where do you keep your money during the day? I'll probably bring like $300 US...is that enough for a week? Too much? And is it safe to keep most of the big load hidden in your suitcase in your motel? Or do I have to watch out for anybody and everybody?
Thanks again for your help... |

The warning about Bangkok is due to the fact that it is a haven for decadence, and will paint the wrong kind of picture for what Thailand on the whole has to offer. Just like any capital/major city, it can't give you the full picture. You can get trashed and pick up ummmmmm......chicks..........but that's about it. It's far better to just go straight to the islands/temples/river tours/elephant tours and save yourself the painful, and pricey, hangovers.
$300(U.S.) should be just about enough for a week, but make sure you have some emergency access money available to you, just in case.
Your money should be stored in small amounts all over your person. I've never had any problems, but that's the safest way to travel anywhere, short of having travellers' checks. |

Just did a month in Thailand this summer. Take the others advice and avoid BKK. If you are on TG 659 you'll get in around 1:45P plenty of time to get over to the domestic terminal and grab a flight to either Samui, Phuket or Krabi. My preference is Samui, Lamai specificlly, you can grab either the 3 or 4:20P flight and get there by 6. See if Bangkok Airways has any deals, in June they had a r/t for 5500 baht
Don't bother with Chaweng, too crowded touristy and way, way overpriced. On Lamai you can get a nice fan place for 400 baht/nite if you want to go upscale 600-900 baht will get you a really nice place. We stayed for 2 weeks at a place called the Weekender nice room with a/c, fridge/tv/tub/beachtowels/chairs&umbrellas on the beach AND a great breakfast bufet for 900 baht/nite. Place even had a pool
Above all DON'T GO TO PATTAYA!!!!!!! Spent 4 days there and it is the sleeziest, nasitest place I've seen there. If you're into the sex scene (including children) or Korean package tours you'll love it. Beach made Galveston, Texas look pristine
Enjoy your time. Wish we could go back |
