...Well, not really.

But I was thinking of taking my guitar home with me when I visit this summer. So I was wondering what I have to do to carry it on the plane since it's not your typical piece of luggage.

what are the airline's rules on such things?

I can tell you that I was on a plane going to Nashville Tennesee and there were several dudes on the plane carrying guitars - one of them was a famious C & W singer...

If you make it as far as the gate and the tell you to check it then then will do a gate check and you can get it when the plane lands....

But ask whatever airline you plan on taking what the policy of the day is...

Depending on the airline. On Cathay Pacific, I had it placed in the fragile/oversized luggage and they put a fragile sticker on it. I picked it up at my destination at the oversize area and there wasn't a problem.

The best kind of case IMHO is the Godin TREC Case. They sell them at this Halelluia Guitar Shop at Nagwon. The good ones are about 120,000 won~ but you can usually talk the guy down to 90- 100,000 won. Light but durable.

Thanks. I only have a bag, so I better look into a case.

If you're able to get your guitar on the plane, then a bag would do. But these days, it's not always guarranteed that you can. You can also get these sturdy black cases for $40-50 at Nakwon from this guy Mr. Jong. (Sorry, I don't have his number handy at the moment.)

I don't know about the policies of other airlines, but Japan Airlines won't allow you to carry on a guitar. (at least not when I flew last)

I had to check it in as a piece of regular luggage, and I also had to sign a waiver saying that I would not hold them responsible for any damages..should they occur. I have a hard shell case and lots of fragile stickers on it, but be sure the latches won't break open. Mine has a lock...but it doesn't work, so I have to duct-tape the case closed. This also ensures nobody can open it without my knowledge.

One more little trick, depending on what kind of guitar you have, mine is a classical (nylon strings) so I losen the tension of the strings before the trip. With all the pressure changes and stuff, it's safer for the guitar.

Also, since it's basically a piece of luggage, you can use it as an extra suitcase. You can stuff it full of socks and underwear. Shocked But that's up to you.

Anyway, I hope this helps.

Have a good trip.

I HATE that freakin' waiver forum.

I pack my hard guitar case with with hand towels, socks, and underwear but I have STILL got my guitar (and more specifically, my case) back with scrapes in it.
