Queen's Knighthood For Bono
POSTED: 1322 GMT (2122 HKT), December 23, 2006
LONDON, England (CNN) -- Bono -- the Irish rock star, anti-poverty campaigner, and philanthropist --
has been awarded an honorary British knighthood, the British Embassy in Dublin said on Saturday.
"The British Embassy in Dublin takes great pleasure in announcing that Her Majesty The Queen has appointed Bono to be an honorary Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in recognition of his services to the music industry and for his humanitarian work," according to an embassy news release.
The British ambassador to Ireland, David Reddaway, is to give Bono -- a member of the rock group U2 -- an "insignia of this honorary award" after New Year's in a ceremony in the Irish capital.
The embassy pointed out that titles such as "Sir" or "Dame" do not come with such honorary awards, "conferred on citizens of countries of which The Queen is not Head of State."
Bono is an Irish citizen. Bob Geldof, the Irish rock star who organized the Live Aid concerts, got the same award in 1986.
British Prime Minister Tony Blair said the award is well-deserved for Bono's "remarkable" humanitarian work and for his "outstanding contribution" to music with U2.
"I'll leave it to others far more knowledgeable than me to talk about U2's music.
All I'll say is that, along with millions of others right across the world, I am a huge fan.
( In fact Blair is such a "huge fan" that he refused to accept a guitar as a gift from Bono only a couple of years ago )
"But I feel a little more qualified to talk about your personal commitment to tackling global poverty and, in particular, to Africa," Blair said in a letter to Bono posted on the prime minister's office Web site.
"I want personally to thank you for the invaluable role you played in the run up to the Gleneagles G8 Summit.
"Without your personal contribution, we could not have achieved the results we did. So thank you and I look forward to continuing to work together to maintain momentum on Africa, and ensure leaders around the world meet the promises they have made."

I would be more interested in whether he's willing to accept the title from the queen.

My feelings exactly. Hell, I guess I'm next in line...or do I have to have money and pretend I care as well? |

Frankly, my sentiments are mixed.
While BONO clearly loves the attention & spotlight, knowing full well how to manipulate the world media, and get his "message" broadcast, i for one believe he is in fact quite sincere.

Perhaps next year Britons can be offered knighthoods if they pledge not to have prostitutes after Christmas parties.

It would be funny if he marched up to the queen while singing "Sunday Bloody Sunday" and politely told her to stuff her medal, but accepting the knighthood would be the wisest choice since he's one of the celebrities that has worked towards maintaining peace in Northern Ireland. |

Indeed, grant an award to an Irish republican thereby claiming him as one of your own-whilst at the same time denying him the proper title that comes with it. Does she give knighthoods to citizens of other countries often?
But i think Bono is old enough to focus on the greater good to be achieved from the attention and his humanitarian work. He's in love with the attention of course...aid work may even be a way to keep his celebrity status into old age. However, not to be cynical- good on him, he was in a position to make a difference, and he has. |

If he is making POSITIVE difference then who the hell cares if he is doing it out of selfishness or selflessness. Still a better man than that drunk drug addict wife beater James Brown. |

I just love how Keith Richard replied to a reporter who asked him if he had anything to say about Mick Jagger being knighted..."It's a paltry award." |

It would be even funnier if SHE was humming the tune when she pinned the medal to his chest. |

It would be even funnier if it turned out it wasn't the Elizabeth II, but Scott Thompson, the self-crowned 'Queen of Canada'.
