Can anyone suggest board games that could be used in the classroom? I am teaching elementary students w/ pretty good English ability (high beginner, low intermediate) We already have Uno, monopoly, ginga, Who is it?, bingo...and a few more which I don't use as they're too easy.
Also, can you help w/ the title of a book (I think published in Korea) which contains various short stories from different countries throughout the world? Some of the stories are The Giant Bird, Mr. Frog, The Tortoise and the Rabbit, The Man that lived 1000 Years They come with short and Q & A's and some exercises for reading comprehension at the end of each story. Has anyone seen this book, or has it and can tell me the title and publisher...Many thanks!

- Boggle
- Scrabble (I made a laminated magnetised version so the whole class can play against each other in groups) |

Mine love Taboo. You could also do some kind of Snakes and Ladders kind of thing where they have to answer a question to advance. |

I find that kids will play ANYTHING in board game form. I recommend making your own! Draw a track that snakes around the page, add some pitfalls and bridges to add some uncertainty, and put any questions you like. They could be based on conversations, grammar, memorizing, or whatever.
You can photocopy it to your heart's content so 30 kids can play in small groups, or add a lot of colour and detail and laminate it for a special treat.
You don't need a spinner or even a dice if the budget won't allow. I sometimes get my students to flip a coin (number = 1 space, picture = 2 spaces) or play odds/evens with their fingers to determine where how far they can travel. |

Flipping a coin it good for 'short track' games. Another way is to flip through a book, they need to divide the page number by 6 to get a number to move. |

Thanks...some good suggestions. I have found and use snakes and ladders already set up on a w-site, mes-English has some good games, many other sites do too. I'm looking mainly for games that can be purchased as I have a budget for them and don't want to spend too much time making games. Also, anyone heard of the book I mentioned in the OP? It's perfect for this level children and I like to do as many kind of lessons/activities to keep the class from becoming monotonous. |

I just saw it today. Lineage the board game. I'm sure the boys will love that one.
Get Catan. It's easy and fun. MAke sure your kids don't choke on the wooden pieces. |
