|
|
| I am trying to finish my outline for my winter camp today, and I have a few extra slots open. Any good ideas that have worked well during camps? I am looking for something that is just new and different from my usual style. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

| Re: the videos above. The kids are cute & appear to be having a good time. But there is zero evidence in any of them that they are learning, being taught, or speaking any english whatsoever. |

Schwa - you trying to be a grumpy old man??
I wonder what would constitute proof of learning for you... Would you like me to hook up microphones to all the kids so I can get an nice clear audio feed of what they are saying?
Surely you have heard of the use of games in teaching ESL? |

|
|
I am a middle school teacher and I am teaching two different classes for winter vacation: One is reading and one is conversation. Each class is two hours in length and will run for three weeks. I am doing a novel study in the reading class. I did this with the summer class and it worked out really well. We read "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and during winter class we are going to read "Matilda". We will watch the movie at the end as we did with Charlie.
As for my conversation class, I have not nailed down everything yet, but I am thinking of doing an advertising unit consisting of a television interview, a commerical, a radio interview, a newspaper advertisment, etc. Not 100% sure on everything yet. If anyone has any ideas, I would love to hear from you. |

Scavenger hunts take a long time and quite careful planning to set up just right. You need to carefully take into consideration the level of the students and make the clues easier than you think are appropriate. Set up a series of clues that start in the classroom and work their way around the school and end up with a cache of candy. About 6 clue stations is a good number.
A fun activity but takes too much time and effort to set up in my opinion. |

The first scavenger hunt I did, I placed 5-7 clues for each team around the school. That amounted to about fifty different clues, and took about 2-3 hours to set up. For a half-hour activity, that's a little silly. Kids loved it. It's essential to color code the clues by group, in this system.
Next time, I had one set of clues for everyone, and observed the social dynamics: would they compete or work together? Predictably, the high-achieving girls immediately formed a team, and everyone just followed them around. Maybe half the class read some English.
Neither was very successful. Neither was a flop. I wonder if a hybrid would work: sometimes there is a clue for everyone, sometimes clues for particular groups. |

I'm going to have the students work on developing and producing three projects, a role-play, a play, and a science experiment. The first four days will be spent developing and/or practicing, and the last day I'll have them actually produce their results.
The role play: I haven't worked the details out yet, but I think I will do a flea market and auction for the role-play. I will probably have the students bring some stuff in to sell / trade, and on top of this I'm going to set it up so the students have to accomplish some other kind of goal using fake merchandise.
The play: I'm going to have the students write and perform short plays.
The science project: I won't discuss this until I have the details worked out, but I think it's going to be really fun. I'm kind of excited about doing it myself.
On top of the preparation and stuff needed, I'm going to do other activities and have the students keep a diary each day about the day's events.
For an example of one activity, I'm going to do a scavengerhunt with a twist. I'm going to blindfold a student in each team and make the other students give that student directions. When they get to their target it will give them clues to get to the next target (in the same room). The team has to change the blindfolded student and then race to the next target. |

Mine was cancelled as only 1 HS student had signed up.They dropped the idea of having me teach the teachers and/or students' mothers.
So........I get to sit at school from 9-5 for 9 days.Yay for me.I should reflect on how to be a better teacher during that period. |
