No this is not a spinoff of those circumcision posts...

I have a small efficiency apartment on the 1st floor of a villa. In the basement, below my apartment, is a Chinese restaurant (delivery only). The old Chinese place went out of business about a month ago and an almost identical one opened in its place last week by new owners (I guess they have a secret to keep their Chinese place open that the last owners didn't...).

Anyway, I come home from work yesterday to find a huge advertising banner for the new Chinese restaurant draped over my windows- the only windows in my apartment. I wasn't happy. I went to the owner of the Chinese place, asking him to move it so I could see out my windows. He laughed at me like I was attempting to make a joke. Then I went to my landlord who shrugged it off, obiously intending to do nothing. I had my boss call the landlord, making barely a half-hearted plea on my behalf.

So I realized it would be VERY easy to simply open my window, take out my scissors and cut the banner in half, thus removing it from covering my windows. Is there any reason I shouldn't do this? Does anyone know how much a customized banner costs should I be demanded to reimburse them? I don't want to start a war with my neighbors. However, I don't know what other recourse I have...

just do it at night, and dont leave it behind, it must have been those japanese people that dont like chinese food....

Perhaps instead of doing it, threaten them that you will do it first...fair warning and all that! It's not like they wouldn't know it was you if you did cut it, so a warning that you will can give them a chance to do whats right...you might also want to cite fire safety regulations (having more than one escape route) if there are such things here in Korea.

However, what you might do instead...if you can reach it...go to the side and simply untie or cut the cord...that way there is no damage to the actual sign. They will tie it up again, but if you do it enough times, they will eventually get tired of the game (that you must persevere in).

Give the Chinese restaurant another chance. Bring a Korean to speak for you. Many Koreans are just so tickled to be faced with a foreigner that they don't take seriously what comes out of your mouth. Unless your Korean is seriously good or you start shouting and throwing things.

They will probably take it down if they think you are serioius. I'm sure they know that they can't put a banner over somebody else's window! I mean, come on! Would anyone in a western country stand for that!

Go rip it down from outside. If you do it from your place, it's too easy to see the point of origin.

I'd cut it. What can they do to you? He has no business covering your window. I'll bet he wouldn't like it if someone did that to him. Besides, what proof would he have that you cut it? Wink

another idea, go put a big banner or some cheap paper, a mattres sheet or whatever over THEIR window. if they take yours down, take theirs down and leave it at their door.

I;d play a little game. As Poet suggested, undo the cord and when they tie it back up untie it again. They will eventually either move the banner or give up!

It'd be funny if you just cut holes in the banner the exact size of your windows. Keep the pieces in case the owner comes to ask you about it. If he does, just "laugh like he's telling a joke", then hand the pieces to him.

I'd go with !) take a Korean to explain it. and if they refuse, 2) tell them you will take it down. and then just untie it, and untie it, and untie it, over and over again. Sort of like training a puppy.

Wrecking it would be bad. They'd probably ask you to compensate them for it, and then they'd have an in to put it over your window after that.

Just remove it and leave it lying on the ground over and over and over. And if they keep putting it up over and over again, I recommend setting it on fire.
