I doubt if I'd go back to Boca Chica again, but I'd definetely go back to the DR again.

I am very interested in Sosua. Sounds better than Boca Chica all the way around, and I liked Boca Chica.. its just a bit smaller, closer to the capital, and seems like its heyday might be gone and long moved to the northern coast instead.

Locals of Boca Chica really get to know you quick and there doesn't seem to be much business there outside of a few Europeans on vacation. I found the best way to deal with the attention is just choose a couple establishments (bar/restaurants) that you like.. and just give them your business. The more you walk around, the more people keep trying to get you into their businesses all the time. When I was just sitting in one place and relaxing/checking things out.. had a real good time.

Mostly liked the architecure in the DR.. Caribbean is real different from anywhere in South America. Just had a much cleaner and much safer feel all the way around. I'd go back down to the Dominican Republic in a heartbeat whenever I get a chance again.

I really liked Santo Domingo. Real exotic feel to that city. Particularly amazed by how many Italians live in SD/BC and how many real good pizza parlors they have everywhere. EL CONDE was real interesting area.. I'd like to also see Santiago if I get a chance.

I was surprised my Spanish comprehension/speaking was real good there. I had a hard time in Spain a couple years ago.. but Dominican-Spanish was much easier for me. (I learned most of my Spanish in the Andes Mountains of South America - Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia).

I'm glad to hear your beautiful description. It's a place that has stayed in my heart for many year. The Spanish is very unique to the island, but is more similar to South Americans. I understand Central/South Americans much better than Mexicans.

Anyway, next time, hit Sosua for sure (actually Cabarete, which is only a 10 minute moto ride down the street) for partying, or Las Terrenas for a romantic weekend.

I was there last September. Holy cow, was it HOT! I went there for a quickie divorce LOL. The people are very warm & friendly, but the Hilton where we stayed was sub-par IMO. Intermittent hot water, frequent pitches by locals to buy everything from sunglasses to fake amber. The food was interesting but not great.

Nevertheless, go if you have a chance. It may turn out to be your favorite place in the world.

It's not the place to go for the all-inclusive resort thing. You pay too much and it's not as nice as in other places. It's the kind of place for back packers who like to chat with locals and aren't overly concerned about hygiene (meaning that foreigner like me sweat constantly and look like pigs because of the humidity).

My wife and I got married in the DR. We stayed in Sosua for almost a month.

It was great. Very clean, private, and the owner lives in the area. He was very helpful.

Driving is a bit of an adventure there. I don't advise driving at night. During the day, it wasn't too bad. It's no worse than here in Korea.

Dug this one out of the gutter, buy I may be going here for summer vaca.... Can anyone offer some advice who has been recently? What beaches/ hotels/bungalows were your favs?
